Since the area was lacking an official non-profit club, the Mason Dixon Area Reef Club is starting up. It consists of the york, adams, lancaster, harrisburg, and baltimore area.

The club will be hosting monthly meetings which are open to the public and you are welcome to bring the whole family. Meetings will consist of a frag raffle, good food, and socializing. (as well as official club business)

The club will be incorporating as a non profit. More info and the benefits about this will be on the site's forums.

The first meeting will be in December in York. Detailed info will be posted on the site.

The website is http://www.mdreefclub.com

If you have any questions feel free to contact us at Officers@mdreefclub.com

So far we have about 20 people that have expressed interest. We just got the nonprofit tax id number and the website up this week.

Uhhhmmmm.."the area was lacking an official non-profit club" Wow... what forum am I in..? I thought it said "Susquehanna Valley Reef Club?

To each his own, but I have enough of the "structured club thing" with presidents, vp's, cfo's & secretary's at work. There are benefits to becoming "organized" but I enjoy this club because it is NOT that way:) This is my hobby and I like it casual:D

My take on the subject is like this. I think it's great you're starting a club. I think it's great you're searching for new members and spreading the word. I don't really care if you do it in this forum or every forum, that's fine.

What I dislike is the talk of this area not having a reef club. This club was re-birthed from a former club. Over the past year, many of us have worked hard to make this club what it is today.

You may not think of it as an official club, as we have no website, officers, dues, non-profit tax id, etc. But it is still a club and very open.

I don't speak for everyone in the club, as we have no official spokesperson or officers, but I would appreciate it if you do not state that the area has no reef club. This is not the case. The area may not have what you like to consider a reef club, but it does have one.

That being said, thanks for the invitation. Keep us posted on the first meeting date/time and we'll try to round-up some folks to attend.

Best of luck!
-Steve

Again Steve and everyone else, I am sorry about the wording on the post. I can't seem to get it to edit the post. I am sorry if I offended anyone with this thread as that was definitively not my intention. I was under the impression that the club had died and only a few people were getting together.

Apparently other people knew you were still active and had not informed me. This was the only thread in which I stated the wording that way.

I am not a participating member of the club since I don't live in the area, so I shouldn't even be speaking on their behalf. I am only initially managing their website and I my only intention was to help them spread the word. Either way, please don't reflect any offense you may have taken from my post toward the club.

Again you have my sincerest apologies,

Mike

No worries...

I, for one, like our little club the way it is - just a bunch of friends getting together to trading/talking/drinking Bobby's beer. :)

 Lets take it down a notch, here. I think that the wording of guitar's post is entirely accurate.

Since the area was lacking an official non-profit club,

The area does lack a saltwater-oriented club that has government approved non-profit status. The closest, I think, is NCPARS, our friends to the North. No one said or implied that there wasn't a group of people who got together to talk about good tank husbandry or to share coral frags. I (gasp!) agree w/ Steve. I think it is great that you started such a club. Non-profits are a lot of work, so my hat is off to you.

I have belonged to such clubs before, but my inquiring mind was subsequently kicked out of said club, so I'm sticking with this band of loosely organized misfits until my inquiries get the best of them.... :frog:

And LP, where have you ever read that this was the "Susquehanna Valley Reef Club?"

Not to expose PMs here, but the word used to describe the club in a PM was "defunct." You take it down a notch.

I'm not sure how you feel about it Elysia, but I've spent alot of time, effort and money in the past year to help make this club what it is. I've fronted dry goods for raffles, frags for raffles, purchased food and drinks when I hosted a meeting, and even provided a gift card as a prize during the meeting I hosted.

Granted, guitar was told by the MASNA folks that the club was defunct. But that's still a word that offends me after all of the effort I have put into this.

Perhaps you don't feel the same, and would prefer a club with dues and officers, etc. I'm happy with our merry band of slackers.

In regard to the whole mess I started with poor word choice. I can understand the frustration and I feel bad that I offended anyone. Trust me, after working 4 days at macna and all the other work that I have been doing, I know how much work it is.

I do think I was correct in my wording of the post in that you aren't a nonprofit club. In my pm I just said that I wanted to make sure that the club was defunct because I didn't want to post in an active clubs forums advertising a new club.

But just to show you what I saw:
A defunct website link to http://www.harrisburgreefclub.com/ exp 4/2006
Every other forum besides RC hasn't had activity since 2006. (ie reef sanctuary)
And a lot of thread like this:http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=147898
This was all after I spoke with the president of Masna also saying there was no active club in the area.

In regards to dues and officers, all the meetings are open to the public, so you don't really have to pay the $20 a year for your family if you don't want.
By law, for nonprofit status you have to have officers. But I feel the benefits outweigh the cons.

So with this post I am going to let this die. If you want me to remove this thread I will pm the moderators. Also they are supposed to be setting up a new forum for them, so you won't have any more threads/posts like this in your forums.

Mike

Mike, beyond the fact that we have no website, none of us hang out on nanoreef, and we don't care about MASNA, didn't you see recent threads in the forum and think to yourself maybe they're still active?

Especially after I replied to an email from your MOm telling her this, and inviting her to attend one of our meetings.

Why is it you did not post an invitation to your club in the NCPARS forum?

I tried to be supportive of your club in a previous post, then you fire back with sh1t like this...

I think you have officially ruined my taste for reef clubs. This club, yours and any other.

I have a group of very good friends I've met and hang out with who share my interest for reefing.

That being said...

"I'M FINISHED WITH ALL REEF CLUBS FOLKS."

Best of luck to this club and what it was designed to be.

Do your best not to let it become some bureaucratic group of officers and sh1t.

I have been watching this thread since it's start the other day. All I have to say is that once any hobby becomes the least bit business like, it becomes a CHORE. All the fun goes away and it is just one more thing you HAVE to do.
Point is, that's what makes THIS club great. The spontaneity of this organization is great. We can respond as a group in this fashion. We can get together whenever or wherever we want. When you have officers and meetings and all the other stuff, it becomes a burden.
Besides, I really don't want to hang out with white taggers.

Steve, I'll be more than happy to come powerwash your house if you stick around here.

A simple read (or skim of the active topics) of the activity in this forum would've shown that we are not defunct. In reality, we hijacked the Susquehanna Reef Clubs spot on here and assumed squatters rights.

I didn't take your second post as you trying to be nice after I have apologized 4 freaking times. You have fired away at me from the get go. I have never meant to attack your club nor do I have anything bad to say about it. I think any club is a good thing.

Also, don't assume that because you told someone other than me that I already knew. I didn't and I told you that. I assumed you guys were only using the forum to just have a place for locals to chat. I pmd the moderator to remove this thread and I again I am sorry.

Also I didn't post in NCPARS because they aren't in the area of the club. Why would members from up there want to be in a club in the south?
