new reefer in Nashville

Just thought i would say hey to the reefers in the area. I am new to saltwater though I have a few years of African cichlids under my belt until a tank crash while I was away at college. Anyway I am starting up my 55g again but doing a reef setup this time. Not my dream tank, just something to get me familiar with the hobby again, but I do have a couple of questions about what I can get around Nashville.

I was looking through the forums and noticed a few people in this area have black and white clowns. Where are you guys getting these from? They are stunning fish and I would love to have a pair as a main attraction in my new tank. Also are they aggressive? Host easily? mess with your coral at all?

My other question is about LR. I will probably be getting quite a bit of base rock since my tank build will be a slow and steady process, and I will have time to seed the rock properly. Where do you guys buy rock from? Who has the best prices on the best LR around here? I hear sometimes LFS can have low quality rock and expensive prices, but we are lucky to have some good stores around here, so hopefully not true for us.

You guys will see me around the forums, and I would like to start going to meetings as well, though right now I am a little short on time, my gf and I are moving to brentwood area next week. But hopefully after we settle in I can start making it to meetings. Thanks for the help

clowns....sustanable aquatics in east TN. club is doing next meeting as a private tour of the facility tenatively scheduled for may 9

rock.....my "dry" rock for my current build is a combination from www.marcorocks.com & www.bulkreefsupply.com ....can't go wrong w/ either. the "live" rock i have currently all came from aquatic critter on nolensville rd (about 1 mile north of the intersection of nolensville & old hickory where the walmart & lowes is)

LFS....aquatic critter is my personal fav (maybe since i have dealt w/ them the most since i started out). there is the jungle in murfreesboro, fins in franklin & emerald bay in bellevue. great thing about all of them is they give club members 10% discounts on anything. they also host meetings occasionally & offer bigger discounts during the meetings

aquatic critter has also been keeping sustainable aquatics b/w clowns in stock since the beginning of the year & at our frag swap back in jan, the owner told me he sells mated pairs for about $100 & they can be delivered in the AC's regular order. inquire w/ Chris (the owner) at AC...there are 2 chris there LOL

Welcome cowboy20th. I am new to reefing and the club as well. Like you I have prior other aquarium experience. You will quickly see that the people here are great.

+1 to James for his response.

Welcome cowboy, hope you can make some meetings soon so we can get to know you. ditto on what James said, and being a member of the club will pay off when you go to the local fish stores, that 10% off really adds up.

Thanks for the replies guys, the info really helps out. Great to hear that the critter keeps those guys in stock, I will be up there this weekend probably, I hope they have some I can look at. Also good to hear the critter keeps good LR, I used them for my cichlid tank and got some excellent fish from them, had a mating pair of black calvus that I bought when they were juveniles.

I will be joining the club soon, I would love to go to the trip to sustainable aquatics, looks like it would be a cool experience, my current schedule gets in the way though, finals suck. LoL.

Anybody willing to share their experience with the BW Clowns as far as reef compatibility and aggression?

I would say I hear ya on Finals, but I don't have any this semester. :D

However, my wife is graduating May 9th, so I won't be able to go either. :(

Welcome to MTRC! :)

Oh, and if you want some good looking live rock, Emerald bay has some great rock as well. They sometimes get some awesome Marshall Island rock and I think every once in a while they get some Pukani in.

I have two of the BW clowns from the Critter and they are great. They get along with the rest of the fish. No corals in my tank so someone else will need to comment on that aspect.

One word of caution about the Critter rock. While I am a fan of the store and the owner as he has always done right by me, I would not suggest their dry base rock they have for reef tanks. It is very dense and others have commented to me it is not great for reef tanks. Also, myself and others have reported some white/clear slime algae outbreaks after adding it to the tank. Clears up quickly, but looks ugly/worrisome for a week or two.

I have had a pair of black and white clowns for a few weeks now and so far have had no problems with aggression or with any corals. I am very pleased with them. I got them from the critter.
