New RSM 130 Setup

Had a Biocube 8 for the last year and a half, and thought it was finally time to cave in and do an upgrade. luckily got a great deal on the RSM setup, still need to setup the fuge but not really sure how to do that as i'm still a newb. It's a work in progress so far, but right now have about 40 lbs of sand, and 30 lbs of rock in the tank. So right now all i have is some rockscaping, which i'm not completely sold on yet, but i think it looks nice so far...not sure what else to put in it either, currently my biocube houses and oscellaris misbar, and a yellow clown goby. various zoas, softies, and a couple lps in there too. thinking of getting an RBTA and would love to get a mandarin after i setup the fuge. Here's the first FTS of the new setup. will post some of the old setup soon.

I think it looks good just make sure that you leave enough room between the rocks and glass for cleaning purposes.

Ya i tried to make sure there was plenty of room...in the biocube i often couldn't get to some places, thus building up some pretty nasty algae. Debating on putting more rock in there, but not sure how much more to put. I have about 10 lbs in the 8g now, but not sure if i'll toss it in the display or in the fuge eventually.

So today i was trying to setup a fuge for the first time. Failed miserably...how do i do it? I had an "overflow" line coming out of the back, down into the fuge, i siphoned it to get it flowing into the fuge tank below, then the return pump was pumping water back into the filter area, but i was overflowing the fuge still...not sure what to do

any advice? what is the typical way to setup a fuge?

Are you using an overflow box or just a direct siphon from the tank? A direct siphon is an extremely bad idea as you will never be able to control the level of your tank and sump at the same time.

it's a direct siphon...what should i do. currently the middle chamber is where i'm taking water from and pumping back into. I really want to get the fuge setup so i can get a good population of pods with the hopes of a mandarin at somepoint

You need to get an overflow box. I have one I could sell you for $25 that's just collecting dust in my basement at the moment. Personally, If at all possible I'd prefer to just drill the tank, but if that simply isn't an option for you or whatever, then you could use an overflow box. Another option would be to convert a large aquaclear or similar style Hang-On-Back filter into a small refugium. Just have a powerhead pump water into the fuge, and let it gravity feed back into the tank from there.

would it be possible to put a pump in the filter area. I don't have a skimmer back in that chamber. My thought is to have a pump inside the chamber pump the water down into the fuge below...then the return pump would bring it back up to the filter?

Does that sound like it might work? i'm also considering just turning the large filter compartment in the back into a fuge. I have a light i can put back there, and fuge mud and sand....how easy is it to drill the tank? i really don't want to drain the display as i'm trying to cycle right now, but i could potentially drain the back compartment area...i just dont have the tools and want to avoid any drilling if all possible.

I can look into it for you and figure it out at some point...I don't have any specific pictures that I know of right now, but digital cameras help with that. My crazy work schedule right now doesn't help anything :)

As far as drilling, you'd want to be able to turn the tank on it's size to drill "down," so emptying out the back isn't going to do much for you. As far as pumping water down, you're NEVER going to get those two pumps to go at the same rate, which is going to make one of them run dry at some point, and that's no good. I'd either go with the over the back overflow box or I'd convert the filter box into the refugium.

Started stocking some crabs/snails and a few corals i got at the last PMASI meeting. Haven't had a cap coral yet...my wife really likes this yellow one they have in one of the Elmer's displays....we'll see if i can get it that big...probably not...but i'll see if i can grow it out a bit. the fish from the biocube are coming in over the weekend to their new home.

With a fuge the big thing to remember is full is full. What I mean by that is that when your siphon from your tank siphons all the water it can possibly get out of your tank the fuge is full not overflowing. There is a balance point between the main tank and the fuge. If it can overflow, everytime your power goes out you will have a flood. This concept took me until my power went out to realize what it meant.

I'm sure we could start a thread about floods. I have flooded my basement at least 3 times. But knock on wood, not for a couple of years. :smurf:

Drilling the RSM130

Drilling the RSM130

Hi guys

Just wanted to inform you that I drilled a RSM130 today. Serial number 9960 for the record.

Drilled the bottom glass with a 40mm bit in the far left corner in the main tank area.

I recon the bottom is the same glass all the way back to the rear glass.

Will try to drill the rear glass wall as well.

Durso & Sump next.....:bounce1:
