New Sandbed?

I currently have some caribsea aragonite sand in my tank (was dry when i first got it) its a pretty thick substrate, and I am wanting something a lil thinner, would it be ok to add some "thinner" live sand on top of the older substrate? or would I have to take all my older sand out? help and comments much appreciated

Its fine to put the thinnner sand on top, but most likely will all get mixed together eventually. Also, adding the sand to your tank will cause the water to get cloudy for several days.

right, i was thinking of adding a couple of inches like 2 or 3, is there anyway i can make it so that it wont be to cloudy?

The cloudiness shouldn't hurt. It should go away after a day.

Yeah, it won't hurt anything. Just letting you know so you don't freak out or anything when it happens.

your fish should be OK. It is stressful but if they are otherwise healthy is should be tolerable, folks do it fairly regularly.

I would rinse any new sand very well. Use a pipe or hose to dump it in so it comes out of the pipe at the bottom. THis will reduce the amount of cloudiness significantly. A skimmer or micron filter on a canister can remove some of the dust.

awesome thanks jenglish, i do have a 10 gallon tank that i could put them in untilll the sandstorm has ended.. would that be better? also would rinsing the sand out get rid of helpful organisms?

Are you adding dry sand? if it is dry sand it needs rinsed and does not have any organisms in it. If you buy "live" sand it does not need to be rinsed. If the 10 gallon is big enough to house your fish and you can get it set up and cycled before adding sand it would be the safer choice, albeit probably and unnecessary hassle.

im going to add some live sand jenglish, about 2 inches or so... and prob a lil bit more LR.

If you buy live sand it will not need rinsed as it has been pre-rinsed. You would of course risk killing off things unless you were rinsing it with saltwater and that could get expensive Good luck.
