New Scolymia

I'll post some pictures later, but I bought this beautiful rainbow scolymia (australian), and had my LFS hold it for a week as it was shipped kind of rough (however I know these are normally pretty indestructible). Anyways, I picked it up yesterday and was hoping to beef it up as it's somewhat retracted by feeding it overnight when its sweeper tentacles are out. Well, I didn't see them out, and want to know if I should be concerned about its health.

Anyone have similar experiences? I know they do take a little while to settle in.

Give it a couple of days to adjust and just try feeding it, they will usually respond to having food placed in its mouth. They are fairly slow eaters, so if the fish and clean-up crew bother it, you might consider covering it with a container to allow it to eat unmolested.

Mine very seldom have the tentacles out unless it smells food in the water. They can take a very good size piece of food, I feed mine a whole silverside usually.

so if it's retracted into its skeleton, you'd recommend waiting to try and feed? I'll post some pictures later tonight

My scoly is funny. I have to turn everything off so there is no flow, drop food on it an guard it, then wait for it to open. Many only open at night. It does not look sick to me from that picture --- it is not expanded but it does not look ill. As several have said -- sometimes they take a bit of time to adjust. It is a very slow coral!

cool, I'm glad to hear that it looks ok. It isn't quite as colorful even as when I first saw it in the store. I guess I'll give it some time to settle in. Also, the spot that it is in has relatively low flow (compared to the rest of my tank which is pretty high flow, its sheltered by all of the live rock).

You know -- I had mine on the sand and it was happy. Unfortunately I had it too close to my acan and it got burned so I had to move it. It is now sitting high up in the tank, in flow and happy as all get out. It is almost completely healed after having a good chunk of skeleton showing after a couple of weeks. These guys are pretty tough!

sounds good. how close to your acans? mine is about 2-3" away, should I think about moving it, or should that be ok?

IME/IMO, I would shoot for 4-6" away minimum. The acan mesenteries can stretch a decent distance if they want to, and the scoly might get reall happy all the sudden and flatten onut more right into your acan.

I was stupid. Mine touched when they both fluffed out. Just plain stupid. What can I say? Give them plenty of room! Mine are completely separated now ...The scoly was fine with it for several months then all of a sudden unhappy for a day or two and then tissue recession. As I said -- just plain stupid of me. But they are both fine now.
