New seahorse tank advice

Hello everyone after much research I know the seahorses thrive in lower temperatures then we are accustomed to in our reefs. At the end of August I will be receiving my 96*30*30 reef with a 90 gallon sump and 90 gallon refugium from miracles. I wanted to plumb a 20 gallon seahorse tank off of my main system but a major consideration would obviously be the temperature of the main tank. Most likely my reef would be 77-79F. I know this is too hot for seahorses but i discovered this chiller for nano tanks. Do you guys think it will work to bring down the temperature of my 20 gallon seahorse tank.

If your seahorse tank is plumbed into your main system then the micro chiller would have no effect on the temp in the seahorse tank. I found out the hard way that a sustained temp in the upper 70's in an invitation to disease.

I don't know where you live but with the current heat wave in California I could not keep my temps below 80. I have recently purchased an AC unit to keep my house in the lower 70's.

Instead of running the horse tank off your reef why not set it up as a seperate system. If you want large seahorses I would go with a 30 gallon minimun and try for 20 inches in height. An aquarium of 20 gallons really limits what species you can keep long term.

What if you trickled the water into the sh tank from the main tank ... like 1/2 gph? Even a small chiller might be able to stay ahead of the warm trickled water enough to pull the sh tank down a couple degrees. At the same time it would turn 12 gallons of water a day (equivelent to a 100% water change every two days). Cooler temps and benefit from the large water volume.

A test is worth three expert opinons. Give it a try.

I agree with Bruce ... a little bigger and a little taller than a 20 gallon would be more suitable for most seahorse species.

Once I set up my reef I will give it a try. If I cannot get a cooler temps I will just set up the tank on its own. Thanks for the advice. Anybody else have any opinions?
