Update: October 4th, 2015

Update time!

I have been busy making progress on the stand and acquiring equipment. I apologize for the poor quality images of the stand. The space I have to work on it is very small and limits my ability to get a good full shot. The thing is HEAVY and requires at least 2-3 people to move it so good update shots to the stand will be put on hold until it is in its final resting place in my house!

Few notable changes:

  • Changed the sump size from a 55 gallon standard to a 40 breeder.
  • Purchased skimmer Vertex Omega 180i
  • Purchased JBJ ATO
  • I think I am going to go with an overflow from ModularMarine Does anyon/experice e have any opinion/input on this?
  • Purchased RO Buddie with DI, TDS in and out meter, and auto shut off
  • Purchased 2 Brute cans one 44 gallon and one 32 for RODI water storage and salt mixing
  • Purchased a mix of Pukani rock and MarcoRocks (around 85lbs) due to how much nicer they look than the DIY stuff I made, still going to have plenty of extra DIY rock (75 lbs) for sump use/baserock.

Very nice build. following along! I will be starting my own upgrade build soon (either 90 or 120; havn't decided yet).

Thanks!

Go 120! I struggled mightily between 75/90/120 but the extra depth and height of the 120 allows you to be seriously more creative when aquascaping! I hear from a lot of people that went 75 or 90 very quickly wish they went with the 120. Whatever you decide let me know when you start your build. I would love to see it!

p.s. 120 DOOOOO IIIIT! :deadhorse:

i do plan on going with a 120. the only reason i was considering a 90 was due to space limitations (my room that it is going in is only 11x11 and i have a large L shaped desk on the opposite wall). the 120 is 24" deep and with the built-in overflows, the tank/stand would only be 24-26" from the wall. i had also considered going with the non-reef ready tank, drilling my own holes and getting the synergy reef ghost overflow which adds 3.5-4 inches to the back. that would make it 28-30 inches from the wall which may make it too big. so i had then considered the 90 gallon non-reef ready which is only 16" deep. hence my back and forth. i would prefer drilling my own so i could go with the more advanced styles of overflows but which is more important? that or size of tank? i will try to play around with the dimensions of the 120 with the ghost overflow to see if it would be ok in my office space and i may go that route. choices, choices and i haven't even gotten to the stand or other equipment.

Update:

Here is my first attempt at setting up an aquascape. Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated. Tear it apart and tell me what I should change so I do not have to once its in the water! Highest part of rock work ends up about 3-4 inches from the top of the tank. Everything is held together with fiberglass rods (driveway markers from Home Depot).

I would love to see some pictures of the finished product... I know its been a few years, but im planning on building something similar so wanted to check how all went
