New Skimmer Desicisions

I've had a Coralife SS 150 for probably 6 years now and have used it in various builds. It is finally breaking down and I really want to get a skimmer of greater quality skimmate.

I have a 93 cube, with a 20 gal tall. Water height in the skimmer area will be about 11" in height.

Of my research I've come down to Bubble Magus Curve 7 OR Reef Octopus Classic 150 Space saver.

I'd really like to not spend more than $250. Thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

I have a Reef Octopus similar in size to the classic 150 on my current tank. I've been very happy with it. You get a lot of value for the price.

I like my Reef Octopus so much that I selected a larger Reef Octopus when it came time to buy a skimmer for my 180 gallon build.

+1 for Reef Octopus

150 SSS or the classic 160 Int would be my choice.
You could do the 110SSS but for the cost difference I'd do the 150

Yeah I was thinking the same thing... Also if I decide to ever upgrade to a 150 cube it would be able to handle it :).

Thanks for that info. Do you think getting the reef octopus outweighs the benefits of the cone shape of a bubble magus?

I don't mean to hijack a thread, but I'm in a similar boat. I have a 28 gal nano and have the inexpensive JBJ Nano Cube Skimmer. I think it's doing a fair job, would like to have better... thoughts???

I bought a Tunze Comline 9001 when I first started up my 36 gallon bowfront. It mounts on the side with magnets. It did a good job but they are a bit pricey. The upside is that they have a small profile and fit well in most nano tanks. I replaced it with a reef octopus after I added a proper sump.

Yeah, further research just tells me that getting the reef octopus is the smart option. Also the cylinder shaped classic 150 supposedly to performs really well.

Only issue i have now is the water in the skimmer area of my sump is about 10.5". Looks like i'll need to get a stand for the skimmer as it calls for 8.5 - 9" depth.

Let us know how that works our for you, we'll be adding a larger system in the next year or so and will need a good skimmer for about 100-150 gal of total water.
