new skimmer

I think brass is made with copper. Copper *can* kill all your invertibrates (snails, crabs, shrimp, corals, etc.). I found out the hard way when I first started. I was getting my water from copper pipes. Wondered why I couldn't even get a snail to live. When I found out what the problem was the copper had been absorbed into the rock. I wound up cleaning the tank down to the bottom glass and starting over.

Tim,

Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper and as it gets corroded by salt water, a blue green surface layer called patina forms on it to prevent the further corroding. The patina is a copper compound which is not good for our animals as Harry pointed out.

Thank you, TheGriffins, for the info on the valve. The local Ace Hardware here has a 1" one, but it's threaded on one end. I suppose they can order one for me if the other Ace has the right one. I will talk to them. How do you like the mod you did?

1) Anyone want to buy a gently used gate valve?
2) Do you use slip in all your fittings? I like threads.
3) Why are H@rry and Nitroq2 going to giggle then chastise me for thread fittings? :)
4) When will I be able to make decisions on my own without having to say 'DOH!' within...lets say 10 days of doing it?

BY THE WAY...that GIANT aptaisa that was front row center of my tank that I was afraid to kill is gone. GONE. One peppermint shrimp is actually larger than the other two now... :)

(more btw, he is available for rent)

"my" Ace only has the slip PVC gate valves. Most Ace's are probably diffrent. The mod itself works pretty good. I ended up just doing a 90, then gate valve, then a 90. I didnt put the T in. I also cut part of each 90's ends off to shorten the lenght due to only haveing a small area to work in (remember I im using 1.25 PVC which is a real space hog). I havnt had any problems with flushing by not going with a T. If I do, I'll just drill a hole.

Here is a picture of my config if it helps

Very nice, Andy. Thank you.

I like the idea of adjusting the out flow without getting my hand (sometimes my sleeve) wet. I won't normally touch the setting, but I have to if I use AquaMend.
