new skimmer

Jeremy,

I just recieved my new Octopus skimmer. I am having trouble with the instructions. They are bad. I have 2 loose black tubes i dont know where they go to?

Hi,

I agree, the directions are not the greatest!

The black piece with the three nipples is an air silencer for the venturi. The other piece I can not quite tell. I will go and pull one out of the box and see if I can figure that part out.

ok thanks. It still hasnt started to produce any type of foam is this normal?

Is the unit in saltwater now? Is the air venturi pulling in air?

yes i can.

I know it is pulling air, i put my finger over the air line tubing and the water level in the skimmer rises higher..

Looks fine. Give it 72 hours or so to break in.

Agreed, looks A-OK to me! Give it a few more days as Mike suggested and it should be just fine.

Raise your water level inside the skimmer. Have a little more patience with it, I've seen needlewheel venturi's take as long as 5-6 days before they start to skim.

Also, is this a brand new tank?

All thats in the tank right now Jeremy, is the 100# pounds of live rock that i bought from you guys back at the end of last year. No livestock in the tank.

I cant go much higher with the pipe or it will fall off.


Also why does my air intake tubing fill about half way with water? i will blow on the tube and it goes away.

You might make sure the venturi is completely cleaned out. It almost sounds like it's not getting enough air or something. Also, take off the air silencer, and just let the air tube open upon the end as well.

Another thing is that you really don't have any organic in the tank right now, so the skimmer is not going to go all that crazy to begin with.

i never installed the air silencer on the end of the air intake tubing.
