New something while HT'ing fish for Ich...

Hello all,

Currently about 3 weeks in to a hospitalization of my fish for a major ich outbreak, and my regal tang has developed something that I don't recognize. I've been trying to get a decent picture of it, but it is proving difficult as this is a pretty shy fish...

I general, it looks like it is a growth on the gill plate, only on the right gill, and a single spot. It looks pinkish, standing off of the fish about 1/8th of an inch or more, about 1/4 of an inch in diameter. I thought it might be a scratch at first, but it seems to be getting larger in height, but not really in girth...

The fish is swimming fine, eating fine, and not breathing at an irregular rate...

Treating with Coppersafe, current levels are around 3ppm (stupid API test kit: is it orange, or orange?)

This could be from an injury but IME brook can present with a pimple like spot. Are you 100% sure you are dealing with ich? What symptoms did the fish begin exhibiting that led you to a diagnosis of ich? Spots all over the body, flashing, etc?

White spots on fins for most of my fish, and my tangs looked like they lost a fight with a white confetti machine. They were covered. The regal in question was doing a lot of rock-rubbing, which is why I presumed that he scratched himself, but I've never seen a wound do what this is doing.

Random image from the web, but this is exactly how my tomini and regal looked.

As an aside, I have two small ocellaris clowns that have shown no signs of anything, other than being grumpy for being stuck in a little tank with a bunch of sick fish... If it was brook, I'd imagine it would have hit them as well?

I'll try and get a better picture here in a bit, and thank you for the response!

Update: I started looking very hard at my clown fish after your suggestion of Brook and my quick dismissal earlier, and noticed a bit of color discrepancy on one of them. I snapped a few pictures and added them in with the above-linked album of the regal. It might just be a snipe hunt, but figured I would let those with more experience than I take a look.

I may see the beginning of issues but the pictures are not clear enough. If those discolorations become more pronounced, check back.

Thanks for the reply, Snorvich. I dosed Paraguard (a little heavy-handed, but not much past the 10ml for 20 gallon mark) last night just before turning the lights off, and as I breezed by the HT this morning on my way out the door to work, I took a quick look at the tang and it appears that the spot is somewhat reduced and looking more like a traditional scratch-like fish wound as opposed to what can be seen in the pictures.

When I get home this evening I'll reevaluate, redose the Paraguard, and move along from there.
