NEW Specimen tank

one thing isnt it going to be a pain to have to take the lids off every time you are going to feed the octopus.
looks like a serious setup there, when are you thinking of putting the octopus in?

Shouldn't be a problem, just turn the locks and slide the lid off. Lid itself weighs 7 lbs so might not need to lock it down each time. This little guy hasn't gone above the water line in the refugium while I have been watching. In his new tank, he would have to go above the water line and crawl about 6 inches upside down to get to the lids themselves.

I hope to have him moved in by this weekend!

Lock the lids! These little buggers are extremely strong. Yes I learned that the hard way too. There is no slime more viscous and slippery than from an octo taking a walk on dry land.

Ok so here is a question. how about an octo going through return plumbing against the flow. does this ever happen?

I am very interested in following your project. The people that run the marine science center in my town have always had problems keeping them and say that they must be returned to the wild within a few months or they deteriorate. So they swap them out around the 5-6 month mark. They also have a lot of escape stories of course. Feeding is fun, especially if you have no problem getting crabs where you live...SD? That might be tough. ;)

Crush has been feeding on frozen krill & silversides, and raw shrimp. He has gotten every snail that was in the refugium. I am most surprised that he seems to have no interest in the 3 damsels that I placed in the refgium. I hope that this guy has a long life as he is quickily becoming one of my favorite creatures to watch.

There is a pretty good return flow rate going into this tank. I will be surprised if he could fight the current.....

Yes, this is my first. Hopefully this guy will like his new home so well, he won't want to get out.. LOL He has stayed put in the refugium for the past 6 weeks. I will feel much better when he is in the new tank which should be sortly.

I can't wait to see how it turns out and the antics it pulls off. How big will it grow??
I've been told the mantle size will get 6 or 7 inches in size, and 2 to 3 feet leg span. I'm not sure how long it will take to get that size.

Feeding video

Feeding video

I took this video the other night as I was feeding my octopus a silverside on a feeding stick. The octo is on a rock to the right of the stick. Watch closely and I think that you will be as amazed as I was in what happens. Click on the image to watch the video.

OK, so that was a majorly awesome video. Good thing it isn't full grown or the last part of that video would have been your face at the bottom! Thanks for posting that! :D

Ive never kept an octopus and would never claim to be an expert, but from what i have read and seen they can pretty much fit thru anything. It looks as if you have slots in the divider that you had made. Are you not concerned that one may be able to reach the other and cause some harm?

The divier was put to the test today after we put Marcus in his side of the tank. 10 minutes in the tank and he had managed to crab a hermit crab from the other side. Marcus wasn't able to get through the divider, but after a half hour, he was able to pull the hermit from its shell and pull it over to his side.

That's one brite little bugger. Cool video. So even though you have the divider, nothing is really safe on the other side!

I thought that I would see what Marcus would do with a crab in a tupperware container. The video shows that he gave it his best, but in the end, didn't get the crab. Pretty amazing how hard he worked at it.
