The purple thing is a Purple Stag Acro, I also got some Cheto and grape caularpa.

I would like to try a Ca reactor but not really sure how it works.

I have been using supplements for them, My ca today tested at 410 and alk is still high at 13dlk. I got my mag flake today so I am going to start that tomorrow.

I just don't have the cash to buy a ca reactor now

those are good numbers... Keep it at that. You may want to test for Magnesium too. Calcium Reactors look good when dosing starts to lose your attention.

Ya I know my Mag is low like 1050 so I will slowly be bring that up but as far as dosing I got 2 gallon jugs that pump out 1 once at a time so I just do what I need to every day and it seems to be working good!!

well in the short run garret yes if you are going to shut your reef down in one year, but it will save in the long run. All I do is buy a thing of calcium aragonite lasts probably over a year depending on calcium requirements, and refill co2 every 6 months-20.00

bottom line pricing is like this
i know you can get a reactor for 200 easily on the used equ. forum, than all you do is get a ph mon. 60.00 and a c02/reg/bubble counter=100.00

you could probably get into a

360 into it most likely. maybe 50 dollars a year to run it. I know how much dosing costs, it wouldnt take long once you get your tanked staked with calcium requiring coral, you will be dosing your pants off. I realize it costs alot but i do see why james recommends it. I was very nervous when i first tried and wish i had people who knew a lick to help me when i took the leap. If you ever get interested garret i will run over and help you set it all up .

there are down sides to ca reactors including higher co2 levels in your tanks, especially in winter time. Also dosing is a pita but it is still just as effective for growth if you keep it consistent and that is where it gets tuff with dosing.

so it really is just a personal decision in the long run.

I used to dose.... with a CR, you set it and forget it!! Hook a controller to it and you don't have to worry about your pH again!! When I started out, I said I'd never do metal halides.... was I wrong!!

If you start to keep SPS, you need to make sure your Ca, Alk and Mg are good and your NO3, 4 and whatever else are 0.

Well James if you still have the extra one this summer and I have some money I will get it from you but right now I can not aford it.

I understand your position Garrett. But I would work on the reactor before you get too may SPS or hard corals in your tank. Because then you will be going through the Two Part solution like crazy. I doubt I'll have it, but wnen the time comes, I can help you find one and set it up.

OK Thanks James

Is there anything that I can pick up so when it does come time to get one there will not so much cost?? I have a co2 tank that is full I also have a Ph monitor. what else is there besides the reactor itself??

you need to have a regulator/bubble counter, unless your reactor you choose has a bubble counter come on it. Than calcium aragonite, but you dont know what kind you will need until you choose a reactor, they all recommend different ones.
