New SW Tank

Hi all,

I just got my first bits of the package for my aquapod 24g and all I can say is WOW! There is more life on those rocks than I have seen in many established tanks in the area (do happen to be in the colorado desert though). I can't wait for the tank to stabilize itself and onto #2.

Speaking of that, I have a question for all the SW sages out there. Overnight my NO2 and NO3 spiked and I had a bit of a dieoff. I have done a 25% change and cleaned out everything I can (crabs, few worms and a slipper lobster) and am hoping that this works but if anyone has any other ideas or comments I am all for it.

Thanks and look forward to your suggestions.

That doesn't sound right. How long has the tank been set up, and what are all your major water parameters........temp, salinity, pH, alkalinity, etc??

Tank has been set up for 2 weeks with live sand and the paramaters are:

Temp--78-80
Salinity--1.023
ph--7.6
alk--300
NO2--3.0
NO3--10

Also have some fiberous white strings on the rock and brownish white film on the sand and rock. Bacteria blume? If there is such a thing

Ok, for starters your alk at 300 PPM (16.8 dKH) is too high and your pH at 7.6 is too low. You wanna shoot for an alk between about 7 - 11 dKH and a pH of about 8.1 - 8.3 daytime and slightly lower at night but not below about 7.8 or so. If you are getting an accurate nitrate reading of 10 PPM your ammonia and nitrates should be zero or close as nitrates appear at the end of the initial cycling process.

In any case, I would begin doing daily partial water changes using RO/DI water and a good salt mix to start bringing your water params back.

Welcome to the addiction Wolverine1.

I'll have to say, I haven't added anything to my tank since I got part 2 and it's incredible.

I just got my 20g setup and now getting a 75g, this is warning, you will want a bigger tank LOL.

TBS Rock is just incredible.

Thanks shadowbearwv!

The only thing I'm looking to add to the tank is more water movment--The first two rocks that Richard sent are HUGH and I'm getting some dead spaces for water movement.

And I can see the addiction already starting, my fls guy sees me almost daily now.

LOL! I feel your pain, I had to stop my daily visits to my LFS. I was seriously entertaining the thought of setting up a big tank at home.

Wolverine, do remember that posting pictures of your tank keeps us all happy ;)

Hey all, Tank sems to be settling down, got a new tester for NH3 and I'm not that bad off (was getting wierd readings withthe red sea one) and the rock is doing great. Diatoms have erupted though and by looking here I see that that is normal. Anyone else have this happen? Picts coming soon--tomorrow hopefully

Hey guys here's some images of the new tank. Let me know what you think--lovely diatoms though. I'm still working with the camera to show off some of the cooler things like the baby anenomes

Front View--only 28# of rock--12# to go

Wolverine, looks great!

I'm getting the diatom outbreak too. From everything I've read on RC we should expect to see this as part of the new tank transition. The next phase, from what I understand, is an increase in green algae.

Also, just in case of a rock slide (in the future when/if you get more) or any other mishap.. A digital thermometer (cost = $5.99)
is typically suggested.

No sense chancing little pieces of glass from that thermometer and that other stuff they use in there being in your tank. (I don't believe they use mercury anymore)..

Looks like a typical cycle, how does the top of your water look as far as flow?

So far, I've had a very small patch of Cyna, and that transitioned to a brownish algae mostly on the glass. The clean up crew has taken care of that quite well.
Now it looks like it's snowing or dandruff in the tank from all the pods. Hope that's normal.

Now I just have to get the Nitrate down in levels, planning a 20 -25% water change. Reading around 20-25ppm and the Gorg. doesn't seem to like it.

digital thermometer is already in the works Stephany, but thanks for the tip.

I've been waiting for whatever else happens to come in the second part of the package before I get a cleanup crew for the diatoms Shadowbear, but I might be thinking along the wrong lines.

Good luck with the trates--I had a real battle with them before richard eased my concerns.

I started to see a diatom out break on the first part of the package. It disappeared once I got the second part and then reappeared.

Richard will give you plenty of clean up crew, I was also lucky to have 2 keyhole limpits, a couple of snails and an urchin in the first part that did some clean up for me.

Alright guys,

Tank is going great! Here's some new images and I need some help identifying what one thing is. The Last pic has something that's growing on the rock and I haven't been able to identify it yet by any means. Any Ideas? Sponge?
