So far I'm pretty impressed by this lens. Its the tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP (not the new DI model, but the one previous).

Here are my first attempts. C&C welcome!

In the pic of the tort, how far away from the glass was the coral?

I'm using the kit lens on a D40 and wanted to get some good close-ups. I can't afford a macro lens right now but decided to try the extension tubes. While they will work, you have to get the lens very close to the subject to get it to focus. With the 12mm tube it will focus as far as 4 inches from the glass and the rest would have to be touching the other side of the glass. I'm a little disappointed with them but maybe they would work better with a better macro lense. I'm saving my pennies (nickels and dimes too) for the 105mm macro lense.

The tort is probably about 4 inches from the glass I would guess..

Have you considered the tamron 90 instead of the nikon 105? I picked mine up for a little over 200 used, which is less than 1/3 the price that you can pick up a nikon 105. Granted, it won't AF on your D40, but IMO AF is worthless with macro shooting...

Autofocus does come in handy if you ever plan on shooting top down with a camera box. IMO I wouldn't say its worthless.

Ok, I guess not worthless for some. But I know I find myself in MF almost exclusively when I shoot macro. Whenever I've tried AF, its rarely where I want the focus to be...

very nice, i use the newer DI version, and i love it. For less than half the price of 105 VR, its good enough for me....at the moment.
