new tank, 1st fish has ich

if the tanks bran new take the rock sand out vinegar it let it all dry out put rock sand back in and let your tank re-cycle. The cycle will be faster than waiting for the ich and you can copper treat the fish in the mean time to kill the ich.

Brine shrimp eggs. That sounds awful out of place doesn't it? I can't speak to any scientific research done on ich cysts... but each time I see something like this, all I can think of is brine shrimp eggs. I PERSONALLY wouldn't trust drying it all out, just on the idea that no matter how dry it "feels", I don't think there is a good way to know when its completely dry other than waiting weeks on end. If you are going to wait weeks on end, why not just go fallow? The other option would be to bleach.. again, brine shrimp eggs. Decapping is done with bleach.
I know they aren't the same. But its a fine example of what things in this hobby can go through and still survive. No host for 10 weeks has proven successful for most, and if it were my tank (and it was at one point) I wouldn't rock the boat.

Vinegar does the same thing as bleach it kills everything. Thats why I said vinegar it first then let it dry out. Nothing can live through the vinegar and then drying your rocks out for 4-5 days in the sun. Then 2 weeks or so for the rocks to re-cure. Why would you want to wait 3 months or 3 weeks you do the math.

That does sound very logical to me, but having said that I would trust bleach more as a biocide. Which more widely used as an disinfecting pathogen as a cleaning product. And not everyone have the option to nuke or biocide their tanks as they have corals and inverts.

I would agree if it was a FO or FOWLR system, like myself I'm doing something similar, but I'm going to wait it out 10-12 just for extra insurance. I do not want to go through this again if I can try to do everything I can to prevent it.

Good info in post # 19 from keithhays. Almost all of this info is available on the RC ich stickies at the top of the disease forum. There are several lists like this around; and almost all are correct and time-tested. Unfortunately, most of the facts/myths are routinely ignored.

Very true, I have also pick up on the fact that people have more of a tendency to look at at posts in the forums than in stickies. I don't know why. This also put's everything in one place which I like.

Would anyone be able to give me information or a link to information about what other white looking parasites can be mistaken for MI? We just noticed white spots in our tank tonight but it seems they are not only on the fish but everywhere! Also, my yellow tang is acting strange. He's backing up into our shrimp and the shrimp is eating something off of him???

Is your sump low on water? When the water level drops, bubbles cover everything and look like white spots everywhere.

We don't have a sump. As of this morning everyone has a kind of white sheen on them except for the mandarin which has several white dots.

i just setup a new tank. Its been running for about 2 weeks with nothing in it other than LR, sand, and a few nass snails. I added the first fish (a perc clown) a few days ago and I noticed yesterday the fish may be sick with ich. It has dandruff on his head and body but he is swimming around and eating ok.

Being that the tank is still new, what is my best option to treat the fish and/or the tank? The tank also has a large UV installed.

UV is effective in reducing the incidents and severity of bacterial infection but is useless against ich.

This hobby requires a QT setup. You will eventually give up this hobby and become a source of cheap stuffs in Criagslist if you do not have qt and the skills to do QT.

Been in the hobby since 96 and I havn't given up yet. ;)

Explain the cheap stuffs on craigslist and how the ownership of a QT and skills will keep me away from this source.

I am interested in this as well since I havn't had a QT setup ever with my 3 tanks for the last 10 years.
