New tank?? 280ish

Well I'm kicking around the idea of getting a bigger tank! I've been wanting one since I did the equipment room, but I just couldnt' see replacing my Starphire 190. When I bought it, it was all I had room for. Now I think I'm going to go bigger. I've already sent in requests for quotes from a few tank MFGs including miracles in glass who did a Great job on my current tank!

I figured I'd ask what you guys thoughts were. I'm thinking about a 280 or so Probably 72"X36"X25" If I went with an external overflow like I have now it would be 290Gallons. It would be Low Iron glass on the front and sides like I have now. I would probably rebuild my Stand a canopy to split the difference. As in the new tank would sink into the wall 6" more then my current tank and also come out into the display room about 6". If I do a internal overflow I might even go 40" wide to make up for the overflow.

Alot of you have seen my setup if not in person atleast pictures. Im thinking a 280 or so would be a pretty good fit? That size would allow me to keep all my current equipment but at the same time Id gain an extra foot of width! I might have to replace my LUMIII mini Reflectors for full size LUMIII, but besides that I think I'd be good.

I dont know I just figured I'd see what size you guys would do and opinions on the setup.

Which dimension is the height, 25? Mine are 30 inches high and I don't like it that deep. I think 25 would be a much better depth.

Think about this: If you're having it made, make it the same width as your present tank, just have it extend further out into the room. That way you wouldn't have to alter the hole in the wall at all. Then you would have the opportunity to have an aquascape to take advantage of front to back "depth" features like a canyon or island instead of a "rock wall" or "fruit stand" arrangement like you see so often.

Just my .02

LxWxH so yeah I was looking at 6 feet long 3 feet front to back and 25" tall

Exactly what I was thinking If I stick to the same length I can leave the hole in the wall and all the trim paint ect the same. I thought about leaving the stand and canopy the same and just sticking the extra width into the equipment room. But my two issues with this is it would cut into my equipment room alot, plus with the extra width I think I will need to redo my stand to allow access from the front and back of the stand.. No way I could reach 36" accross the sump from one side lol. I also kinda of like the few from the ends so It would be nice to add to it some and not just stick it all in the wall.

That would be good. I wouldn't put it any deeper in the equipment room. You've got plenty of room to have a super "walk-around" tank. That would be big-time kewl!

8ball LMk if you do upgrade i would be interested in your tank. Check of perfecto's new tanks. They just came with a low iron 300g right about the size your looing for.

Sure Joey, Thanks for the tip. I'm considering the perfecto also. Little worried about getting a perfecto tank.. But from what I've read their new tanks are pretty good. Black silicone starphire glass, ect ect. I would have to have internal corner overflows though. They are also 72"x36"x27.5" So a couple inches taller then I was looking for.. Mhhhhh 300 Gallons does just roll of the tongue though haha.

Sorry to say out of 3 Tank MFGs I emailed yesterday I've only heard back from 1...I've also checked on the perfecto. I could have it here in two days lol Thats Quick!

Apparently someone stuffed too much money int he tip jar at the club meeting this weekend. :)

Haha so far both quotes I've gotten are cheaper then my 190 was.. Since they dont have external overflows or Euro bracing :eek2: Not to mention my 190 has a 5/8 tempered back and bottem panel :) Got to love those canadians

The perfecto's are sweet. I went to Atl a couple weeks ago and one of the stores over there had one in stock and it was sweet

LOL I need to reconsider professions!

Seriously though, don't base it on "low bid" we all know how that normally turns out. Wish I could afford your cast offs, that's a fabulous setup!

Nahh I requested quotes from several tank builders.. Just the two I've heard back from dont offer the above features. So in turn the price is much cheaper. But with the Equipment room I can go wider so the External overflow isn't a have to have like it was the first go around. I would really like to keep Euro bracing though.

Well you know if you guys drove 2 kawasakis insted of 2 harleys:)haha

Yeah well you know, the husband is already trying to put his hot rod decals on my stand, he says "that's where all my mustang project money is going" But speaking of the bikes we need to go ride one day, he's home again the next couple of weekends. That is if you don't mind riding with American Biker Trash ;)

Sure..I need to get out ride my Vulcan! I've got it listed for sell :( since I haven't been riding it. Wayyyy OT but since its my thread hey,, My sister is opening a bike ACC shop called North Alabama Bikers Supply

I just thought about it and I should have posted that in Mariners thread... I feel stange Hijacking my thread insted of his :P

I'm gonna go ahead and ask this because I know it has crossed your mind. What about building your own acrylic tank? With your DIY abilities and experience, I don't know why not. I'd like to see it done. Matter of fact, I'll come help you hold something, squirt glue, pull pins, etc.

Wha 'bout it?

lol Thanks not sure about my DIY Abilites though. But I'm about 99% sure Im going to replace my current 75 gallon sump for an Acrylic sump that is a little shorter and I guess maybe wider now?.. I used a AGA75 for my sump last time. It works pretty good, But I find its just a little to tall. I knew this when I bought it I was just lazy though it it was a easy fix :|

I dont really like Acrylic display tanks. I mean I love the look when they are new. I also really like the rounded corners and the fact that I wouldnt need 4 guys to move the stupid tank..But my A #1 issue with them is they are Soooo Easy to scratch. That alone would be a no go for me.. You pretty much have to clean them non stop.. If you ever let things build up on your tank its almost impossible to clean them without doing damage..I have borderline OCD when it comes to scratces, cracks and dents in stuff.

HaHa I might still take you up on your offer though when it comes time to build my sump! I'm thinking 4'Lx24"Wx15"T?

I think you could handle acrylic Will -- I have never have scratching problems with acrylic. But not with a soon-to-be toddler in the house!

Yeh, what's up with that? I feel like Rodney Dangerfield in reverse -- I can't get no lack of respect around here.
