New tank making waaaaay to much noise...

So i've setup the tank (at least the basic plumming) and i can't seem to get it to quite down. Here's a video of my setup :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IRiAVCsbyM

I'm not sure if you can hear it properly in the video but there is serious noise coming from there... It's basically just the noise of water running down the pipes and once in a while a big gurgling noise.

I just got this whole setup from someone who was selling his tank, and it had an overflow and one drain hole in the back of the aquarium, I would really prefer not to tear everything apart and drill another hole, is there anyway to get it to quite down?

I feel like if there was a full siphon in the drain pipe then there will be no noise, but I really don't know how to achieve that.

The drain line is a 2" going down to a 1 1/4" line

My pump is registered 5000/liters per hour

At this point i'm pretty desperate so any help would be highly appreciated.

You might want to try to open the hole up a bit on the top of the standpipe, it may not be getting enough air. I take a drill bit and just turn it bit by hand, I mean you want to do just a little bit, then wait a bit to see if it smooths out. Repeat if necessary and I can't emphasize just a little bit at a time. You may also want to try and extend the pipe in you sump down some where the water flows from the overflow, by dumping lower it may quiet it down even more, not as much slushing.

You cannot have a full siphon on a single drain.

I think it would help to put an elbow on the end of the drain pipe that is in the display. Google some pics of "durso standpipe" to see what I mean.

You should probably slow it down a little if it's filling and flushing, that happens when you are close to the maximum capacity of the drain and since you don't have an emergency drain I think you ought to have a little more wiggle room. It will probably be a little quieter that way too. A gate valve is a better choice for the return line than the ball valve you have, because it lets you control the flow easier to turn it down a little.

You really really should replace those metal valves with plastic ones.

You need to slow the flow down quite a bit by the looks of it, and you definitely need to get those metal valves out of there

I hate this durso bashing that goes on here. Sometimes it's just not an option to run a bean animal so stop shoving it down throats.

In regards to the durso I would agree that you're running too much flow. Dursos can't pull as many gph like other drains so you'll have to dial back the return pump.

Drilling the top of the drain to add an airline way down the pipe will also help greatly in reducing the noise it makes.

When correctly put together the durso runs very safely and very quiet.

I would:
-Drill a hole in the back of the tank and add a second emergency drain line.
-Use a gate valve instead of a ball valve at the bottom of the drain line, gate valves are much easier to adjust.
-Never use a metallic valve or plumbing parts, they will corrode and leach metals into your water, many of which will kill corals and even fish.
As suggested above add an down turned elbow at the drain inside the overflow box.

I must have missed the durso "bashing", but I would put my vote in the beananimal setup as well hope that is not considered bashing another method.

aahhhhhh... your in it now man... welcome to the club of... recommending something better to a person in need.. eer..wait.. why is that bad again? ;)

I tend to agree that there's definitely a strong "Bean animal" undertone to this site when someone has a plumbing issue. Which, they're great and all, and I might run one if I had the setup for it. However, I also realize that a lot of people are just wanting help to fix an issue with their particular setup. Suggesting that they scrap everything, drill the tank, and re-do all the plumbing probably just frustrates them even more, especially when it's not necessary to fix the issue. My durso also works just fine and is almost dead silent.

As others have said, cutting down return flow will help quiet the water noise and help with the toilet flushing/gurgle sound. Other than that, it doesn't sound quite as bad in the video as the post makes it out to be. I definitely think the metal swing valves, though, should be removed/replaced with PVC.

I'm afraid you'll have to drill an extra hole to get it really silent no matter what kind of silent return system you want to build. I use a herbie overflow on my system(s) of 350+gallon because it's super simple, it can handle a lot of water and it doesn't create bubbles. I have a RoyalExclusive RedDragon 12000 return pump supplying a 250g and 40g system and the herbie system handles it easily.

+1 I hate when someone ask for help and rather than to help them with what they have, they just start recommending replacing. I have a 90g and 210g with dual overflows, both running durso. Both in my office and they run quiet, when the fans on my leds come on, that's louder than the tanks.

I run a herbie in my tank. A full siphon will definitely get your system to quiet down. I was amazed when I first plugged my pump in. If drilling another hole isn't an option, could you just do a siphon over the back and use the drilled hole as the emergency? You could also put an elbow in your bulk head and adjust the angle to see if it will quiet down. That's about a $0.50 fix. Good luck.

It is most certainly possible to have a quiet durso. My durso on my 90 gallon is about 99% inaudible. Just ensure you have enough air intake to avoid the toilet flush phenomenon, and build a silencer pipe to catch the bubbles in the sump and it'll be dead silent. search "reverse durso" for the idea of the silencer in the sump. Worked wonders for me
