New Tank Ordered! 112 Shallow Rimless

I must say that I'm really excited about this! We have outgrown our 40G mixed so my wife and I decided that we should join the rimless shallow reef club.

And so I pulled the trigger on a custom thank from Miracles.

Our lighting, 48" 2 x 250w Giesemann Infiniti is already on it's way and the living-room to basement sump plumbing plans are all drawn up. I managed to talk my father in-law into building us a sweet custom stand and I scored a Red Sea C-Skim 1200 for a really good price over boxing week. Oh, and 2 Vortech MP 40W's for additional flow.

All live stock from our existing 40G will move after I can source some more LR and LS.

Thanks for reading and please share your thoughts and tips!

Thanks GSMguy!

We'll see how well the C-1200 performs I guess. It's a fairly new product on the market and has some nice features like the neck washing etc.

I should have posted this to the Shallow Reef Tank thread but I was too excited and forgot!

The tank and stand should be ready by mid March. I'll do my best to keep up a proper build thread.

Cheers!

I'm TDF's wife and stoked about the new reef!! I'd love to hear suggestions on fish, I have the following wish list -- keep in mind that this tank will not have a cover and want to keep general fish size on the small side:

- Coral Beauty Angel (1)
- Black & White Ocellaris (m/f pair)
- Purple Queen Anthias (schooling group)
- Bicolor Blennie (1)
- Banggai Cardinal (m/f pair or group???)
- Copper Banded Butterfly (1)
- Leopard Wrasse (m/f pair)
- Flasher Wrasse (3? 2f/1m)
- Scopas Tang (1)

Current fish are:
- Midas Blennie
- Firefish
- Rainford's Goby
- Blue Green Chromis (2)
- Yellow Barred Maroon Clowns (pair) (Thinking of rehoming them.)

Inverts:
- Skunk Cleaner Shrimp (2)
- Peppermint Shrimp (2) (Actively eating aptasia!!!)
- Sexy Shrimp (2) (Will be moved to the fuge so they don't get eaten.)
- Orange Starfish
- Rose Footed Fighting Conch
- Astrea Snails

TDF would ideally like to keep aquacultured fish only but in my opinion, I don't think this is realistic. Opinions welcome!

I rendered the tank and stand together so my father in-law would have an idea of what he's building. The opening on the left side is for the ReefKeeper Elite Interface. We have yet to choose the finish but will likely opt for a horizontal wood grain.

Giesemann Infiniti Un-boxing & Mini Review

Giesemann Infiniti Un-boxing & Mini Review

Included:

48" Aluminum / Magnesium Fixture

4 x 48" GM PowerChrome Actinic+ 22000K (Will only use 2 of these, may add 2 12000K T5's)

2 x 250 W DE GM MegaChrome MH Bulbs 13000K

2 x 250 W GM Ballast (1 of them also combines T5 ballast)

1 x Hanging Kit

The fixture is well packaged and the distributor even put a shock sensor on the box to record any abuse during shipping. Quang at QB Aquariums inspected the fixture immediately upon arrival and we picked it up a few hours later.

"Made In Germany"

Cars, appliances, beer and of course, aquarium lighting. The Germans know engineering and it shows. The Infiniti is solid but not heavy and the fit and finish is excellent. The MH UV glass is top notch and the reflectors are, well, reflective. 99.8% to be exact!

Installing the T5's and MH bulbs requires the removal of one end cap panel fastened with 4 allen screws and is easy and straightforward. The Internal wiring is top notch, no shortcuts or sub par components anywhere in sight (Are you reading this PFO?).

The supplied ballasts are equally well built and are so nice looking that it will be a shame to hide them in the fish room...

Wearing latex gloves (to avoid getting my greasy mitt prints on the reflectors and bulbs) I installed the T5's & MH bulbs. I then test fired them and the MH's ignited quickly with minor hum and coming up to full brightness after ~3 minutes. I glanced over to our 24" Solaris LED fixture over the 40 G and it looked like a tea light candle in compairison the the Infinity.

I must admit that I did have some moments of buyers remorse after placing the initial order as it is fairly pricey but as soon as I un-boxed this very sexy light those thoughts vanished in a bright beam of MH light.

Nice tank! I have been thinking about doing something similar. Are the overflow chambers connected or are they totally separate? Not sure if it matter either way, I was just wondering.

I will be following along on this one.

Thanks,
Dave
