Hello.

I am back in the hobby and setting up a new 75gl tank..looking for suggestions on what sand substrate to use..this is a new ya k for my son who is new to the hobby ..any suggestions as to what sand we should buy and also ..is there a calculator to determine how much sand I need in a 75gl tank..will start with minimal depth I would think ..

Suggestions are much appreciated ..thanks

Caribsea Special grade reef dry sand is commonly recommended...good middle of the road as far as grain size goes...small enough for sand sifters and big enough to not blow around once established.

1 pound per gallon is usually sufficient

Thanks for the quick reply..there seems to be many name varieties of this product..is there a more specific name I should look for or just what you wrote above?...thanks

Spread the word about Chloroquine Phophate to treat ich. Its the professional choice when it comes to institutions, not copper.

Tampa Bay Saltwater (TBS) sand and done. Did it on my latest 150 and won't ever consider another option..

I use small pebbles of crushed coral, the size of a pea and slightly smaller...sand always blows around, gets all over the live rock and leaves bare spots on the bottom. If you are dead set on sand , I have several bags of very nice white sand, think I paid $60 a bag. Pretty sure they're 50 lbs ea. Gorgeous if it would stay in place.

I looked into their sand...looks so nice! But soooo expensive! I'm in NY so shipping was a lot. Did you mix it with anything else?

The Tropic Eden reef flakes work well for me. Just the right size to burrow and not be a gyre-created sandstorm.

+1 for Tropic Eden Reef Flakes. 2 bags will be enough. A lot of people mix the Reef Flakes with the Mini Flakes to get the grain size they want.
