New Tank Setup: Need Local Advice/Help

I'm just getting back into the hobby and have decided to take it slow, educate myself as much as possible, and do it as correct as possible, and hopefully it will turn out to be what I want...

I just placed a major order for a new tank at Aquatic Critter, now I'm trying to figure the rest out. I have a hardly used light, a Coralife 36" 1-150W HQI, 2 PCs, 2 LED unit...will likely get a T5 Tek-Light, 6 bulb...but it will due for now...

Here's a post I placed in another forum section:

Anyone have experience with the Sealife Systems sumps/refugiums and skimmers?

Anybody have a good used sump/refugium setup out there that would work well for a 90gal tank?

Thanks,

John

Hey John,

Welcome back to reefing :)

I've not had any experience with the Sealife equipment, maybe someone else can chime in on those.

Octopus, and Vertex have been the more popular choice as of late for many of our users, and I think you would have good luck with either brand. Supposedly the Vertex is a lot of bang for the buck. I myself am using an Octopus Extreme 160, and I've had excellent luck with it so far.

Planning the lighting is always an entertaining thing. If you can, its always good to try and budget for it. LED is becoming popular in its "Green" aspect as well as lifespan. Sadly to go LED its either a very expensive kit, or a DIY solution which can involve a bunch of work.

I'd say the 150W may be inadequate for a 90G tank, due to the depth, and would recommend prob at least 250 to get decent light to the bottom of the 90g tank, but ultimately its going to come down to what do you want to keep in the tank.

If no one has a sump for sale, you can easily DIY one up out of any ole tank, get some glass baffels cut, and silicone them in. Cheaper then any manufactured solution, but requires a little work :)

Welcome back!

yeah for the sump, i was gonna do the one the critter sells, but instead decided to diy one of my own out of a 29g tank from glasscages. read up on sumps on http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

i probably have my rough sketch of baffle layout that would be easy to modify for yours depending on what skimmer you decide to use.....

glasscages 29 - $51
cut glass baffles - $20ish
silicone - $15ish
diy satisfication - priceless :)

MVLK has Megaflow 3 that would work.

Thx for the plug Andy... The Marineland 3 I have would probably work well for you. Is $200 OBO.
