i literally started my first tank about an hour ago, its a 125(im so excited). i started the skimmer (ASM G-3) and noticed that it seems to be filling the collection cup really quickly with a lot of water. is this normal or do i need to adjust something.

You need to adjust the water from the output tube to allow more flow out of the skimmer, this will lower the internal water level, you want the water level (without foam) to be at the bottom of the cone leading to the riser tube.

Just push/pull that output tube to the height you need. It will need to be adjusted as the skimmer breaks in.

When I first started up my G3 I actually had to make a shorter output tube out of PVC so I could keep the water level down.

I only needed it the first week until the tank settled down, after that the factory one worked fine.

You could have run it with vinegar water for a day, I found that helps with the berak-in period. But like the rest have said lower the riser tube. You will have to adjust is as your add more fish and stuff and if you like to run your skimmer wet.
