New tank thoughts

From John at King Fish John in Austin,TX:

“AGE is developing 4 "standard" tanks. They will all be rimless and braceless, have 3 sides starphire, a 1" PVC bottom, and the option of an internal or external overflow. The 4 sizes are 18x18x18, 30x18x16, 24x24x24, and 36x24x24.75. They are still developing the cabinet and packaging but they have the glass ready to go. The largest of these tanks is quoted below:”

36x24x24.75
3/8" glass, rimless and braceless
Starphire front and ends
1" type 1 PVC bottom
External OF on the back

Around $1000

The sketch-up below gives you an idea how this tank will look with my 24” 250watt Giesemann Infiniti fixture. What do you think of the size? I originally requested a quote for a 36x24x20 because I didn’t want something so tall but they told me that the quoted size will be cheaper since it is not a custom size. I’m thinking now that I drew it up it’s not so bad. Thoughts?

that is a fantastic idea on their part. would have saved me a lot of headaches and money planning this kind of thing from scratch.

The extra four inches should not be too big of a deal. Although, those shallow tanks are really neat.

Personally I would be much happier with a cube. So, 36x36x20/24. The symmetry or something of the cube shape makes it so much more desirable and awesome looking.

I would enjoy a more shallow reef but I'm trying to keep cost down. A 36x36x20 would be awesome but too large for my space, I would need to upgrade my lighting for sure.

Also don't forget that it's rimless, so with an overflow your going to have a few inches on the top that are empty.

I have considered that. It's going to have an external OF, I will ask what level water will be at.

having it deeper will open up a wider light range for you to keep different corals. if you are running a sandbed then you could use the extra four inches for a deep sand bed in the display tank and with the bigger tank you also have the stability of a greater volume of water. one thing that will help us give opinion is where in your house are you going to put it ya know. one tank may look better on a wall than another but that is purely personal preference.
