New tank.

Okay...so the only head pressure is that between the CL intake and outlet...regardless of where the pump is in relation to those? Pretty close?

Exactly correct. Once you crack the valve from the tank, the water will mysteriously go down the pipe to the pump and then back up to exactly the same level that the tank outlet is at. It happened on mine and I scratched my head a bit. But, I used a pump stand also, because more plumbing to the ground meant more head loss in the plumbing itself. I really don't know if it would have made a difference or not because I didn't try it both ways.

One thing I worried about in yours is using rigid piping between the pump and tank. I've read stories about resonance problems (noise) that couldnt be fixed because the solid pipe. That's why I went with the flexible hose and barb fittings...but again I'm not sure if it was overkill because I never tried it the other way. But..if you tested it all out and all worked great, then by all means, go with it.

There is no rigid pipe between the tank and the pump...flex PVC was used between the bulkhead and the pump, and there are small pieces of black flex pipe between the 1.5" 'T' where it reduces to 3/4". It is completely silent, and very little vibration compared to my current tank.

so you have one hole in the back of the tank for a CL intake, what type of screen are you going to put over the hole on the inside?? will there be a lot of suction created by that pump?

I was wondering this too.

The screen I have is just like the one Cody is using...very flat...like in a jacuzzi, or hot tub...it says it flows 80 GPM.

Richard, I know you plan to put a lot more flow through the screen than the 1200GPH that I'm flowing. Just to let you know..I drilled all the screen holes out as a "just in case" measure. I don't know if it helped..but it didn't seem to hurt any.

Good deal on the low noise. Is the Flex PVC the pretty much rigid but semi-fexible PVC type that bonds to regular PVC fittings?

willember explained it pretty well...

I think the easiest way to understand the CL/head pressure thing is to imagine it in with the pump turned off, but with the pipes full of water. In a return pipe from a sump, gravity will push all the water down back into the sump. that is what the pump is fighting and is called head loss. In a CL the water in the pipes would only drop to the intake level. Even if the pump itself is 50 feet below.

Basically if you have a pump sitting on the ground drawing water from a tank of water also on the ground and it is forced to push the water up to the roof of a 5 story building it encounters significant "head loss".
Same pump and a similar situation ... except this time the intake of the pump is connected to a tank of water on the roof of the 5 story building. The hose runs all the way to the ground and then the pump simply returns the water back up to the roof. Now this pump has zero "head loss" . This is why it does not matter where you put your closed loop pump. The only losses it will have will come from the restrictions in the tubing and connections.
Hope it isnt clear as mud now. :)

Well, the 90 gallon is broken down, and the 120 is finally in place.

Everything is in a 100 gallon rubbermaid tub for the moment. I will probably move everything next weekend.

I have also decided to keep the 90 gallon...that will be a whole different thread though.

I got anxious to see it in it's new home...so I asked Sam to help me out. I will still need help next weekend, though.

And now you won't get a crick in your neck trying to watch the TV and tank at the same time:).

Barret,

He still loves you, he's just trying new things:D.

The tank looks awesome. Im super jealous. Build me a stand please! On another note you guys seem to talk about head alot. jk. What are you gonna put next to the tank on the other part of your stand?
