The ro unit from Spectrapure didn't work out. Now I'm back to ground zero. I checked into bottled water but even at a discount that was WAY too expensive! I'm in the process of looking at commercial sized units and hopefully that will pan out. The hard part for me is that I tried to plan for alot of areas with this project but never issues with the water quality. You never know in this hobby.
As far as the road trip goes...I'm game...seriously! If people want to make the trip I'll host the tour and the BBQ! Talk to the prez and see if that is a possibility. Let's just make sure I get water in the tank first!

Seriously though, so all that effort spent making the ro unit and it still wont work due to the CO2 im assuming? Do you have the option to send it back or are you stuck with it now since they had to tailor it to your situation? This might sound likes its coming outa left field but, have you talked to any hospitals or military establishments about your water issue? They have to have some pretty 100% pure water and (the military) has to beable to aquire it from anywhere i believe. Might be something worth checking into though I dont know if they will speak to civilians about it.

Well, it's already been sent back. I tried it for a couple of days and was not happy with it. Just didn't peform like I felt it should. I also didn't like the extra DIY looking items (degassing chamber) I had to make. I'm trying to keep things looking as clean on the backside as I am on the front.
The military thing is an option. I'll keep that in mind in case the commercial sized units don't work.
Arrowana"s? Hummmm...I don't like things in the house that could snatch up family members in case they get too close!

I don't think the military is really an option, they can make potable water but I don't think it's 100% pure, 0 TDS, water. On top of that I don't think they will be willing to share. I think Tom's right about the commercial unit. It's probably your best option, unless you want to set up a large rain water collection tank that you can filter.

Through this whole ordeal I feel it would be easier to pan for gold than it is trying to purify the well water I'm dealing with. After talking to another company tody it sounds as if they can come up with a solution but it might take another couple weeks to determine the correct way to go about things, get parts and install everything. Never in my wildest dreams would I have figured I would be without a tank this long. I broke my last tank down in June of 06 and now it could be almost a full year before I get fish in the tank after the cycling process...unreal!

You may want to take a look at these, I had one on my house when I lived in Indiana and had some of the worst tap water imaginable (it came out of the Wabash river) http://www.ionicsfidelity.com/ also The Filter Guys are in the upper midwest (Minnesota?) and may have attempted to solve some of the same water issues.

bohlke...thanks for the info. How do these differ than a regular ro/di unit? I have however gone with a local water company for a larger ro/di filter than that of which Spectrapure designed for me. I THINK we have the problems solved from that of the last time around...but of course time will tell. It won't be in for a couple weeks so it shouldn't be too much longer. Heck I've waited since November to fire up the tank, whats a couple more weeks?:rolleye1:

Its basically a pre-filter for the RO/DI unit. It also softens water but I think the big advantage was that it treated the water with a high GPH as it is a whole house system. I dont know the specifics but there were so many bad things in the water it was horrible and to resolve it the city had the chlorine level a bit high. This filter fixed all of that and you could drink the regular tap water but the RO/DI was of course better.

Thanks for the heads up. My issue is the high iron, hardness and tds readings. Do you remember what you had in these areas for comparison?

Our issues were high TDS, very hard water, and high chlorine. It was about 15 years ago so its hard for me to remember what the values were. I do remember that when we tested the water the TDS value was off of the chart. You could smell the chlorine in the water as well. After we put the filter on the water it was good.

I've enjoyed reading your thread, and I'm envious of your rate of progress, too.
One thing I noticed that I'm curious about: do you have a lip there to deal with saltwater splashes/drips? I see those unprotected outlets at the bottom and wonder if that might be an accident waiting to happen. Then again, if your husbandry is as ship-shape as your plumbing, maybe you never splash any water outside your tank... I know I'm guilty, though!

Sorry, no new pics.
In fact, I've been at a standstill with the water. No solutions yet even though a new custom ro/di unit was installed. The possibility of having to breakdown the system is looking more and more like a reality.

I am just wondering... Are you positive that the water issue will be a problem? Any chance to set up a small 29 gallon set up using the water and filtration you have, mixing salt and seeing what happens... is there any buffers or such that can be used. I would be bummed if you tear down.

Yeah I think it would be a disaster with using the water only "partly" purified. From my "sources" you want your make up water to be at 5 tds or less...preferably 0. Mine is at 100 right now after going through the ro. It's atarting at over 1200 ppm!! My tap in Omaha was about 200ppm. At over 6 times the amount I had in Omaha, I'm not taking any chances!
The small set up is a possibility I guess...just not sure I want to go through the trouble of setting that up. I'll keep you posted on the outcome of todays "fix" on the unit!
