New to Chillers - need advice

2) Fans are optional. If you have a Neptune Aqua Controller, you can program it to have the fans turn on at a certain temp and then have the chiller kick in at a higher temp. You actually won't need the fans if you will be running a chiller, it's just more electricity being used. The chiller will cool the tank a lot faster than fans and your evaporation rate will be reduced dramatically by replacing the fans with a chiller.

Agree abotu teh evaporation, disagree about the power consumption?
The fan will cool the tank more cost effectivly than a chiller.
I still use both... a 1/5hp JBJ and a small hood fan. The fan keeps the hot air from my lights (in a hood) from heating up the water, and the chiller does what the fan cannot handle.

I also think that the rock in your tank DOES count b/c hot rocks do contain heat and are part of the system. You need to cool the water so that the water can cool the rock.

For sure, remember having the chiller come on then turn off too quick isn't the best.

Again, I respectfully disagree.

Do you want a chiller that runs non-stop, or only 25% of the time.
I'd asy that the one that runs 25% of the time will last 4 times as long.

You don't want to run a 1/5hp chiller on a nano ;) but I'd rather have one a little over powered than one a little under powered.

Think of a car/truck.
If a car has a huge engine, it will get up to speed quickly and then be able to coast a bit. Or would you rather have a 4cyl engine in a big truck that is constantly working at its limit to get the beast up to speed?

jefathome...thanks for the advice...what is your total water volume in your setup?

70g (no sump) 1/5 hp JBJ with a panworld 50px

I live in Mission Viejo, and rarely use the A/C

The pump comes on for a bout 15 minutes out of every hour during the summer. Not this week though:thumbsup:
The fan is linked to the MH timer, so only comes on when the REAL heat is being produced.
In other words, the fan is to get rid of hot air in the hood and keep teh water from getting hot, not to cool by evaporation. (Proactive vs reactive?)

I understand your disagreement, but his whole point is to not deal with topping his resevoir every day or every other day, since his sump fan/s are on constantly. I should've been more clear and said no need for a sump fan if you run a chiller. All I meant was that he didn't need a fan for the sump. Not in whole. I completely agree with you in regards to having fans inside the canopy as I would never use a canopy without fans.
As far as the power consumption, if you read my post again, I did state that if he were to run the fan in his sump and a chiller at the same time, then yes, it would consume more power instead of just running the chiller.
I did not state that the chiller would be more cost effective in electricity than a fan would be.
Where did I state that rocks don't count for something? I stated that rocks and other things in the display take up water volume.

With the whole 1/3 vs 1/4 vs 1/5 chillers on this thread, it looks like people just have different preferences and how they see things. Which ever you get 1/3, 1/4 or 1/5, all of them will work for you. All you have to do is decide on how much you want to spend, how long/short you want the unit to run when it cools.

I wouldn't go lower than a 1/5

Plus all chillers ARE NOT created equal...Those cheaper Asian chillers claim to use less power and cool just as good..If you believe that I have a nice white acro for sale.

I'd take a look at the Aqua Logics and TradeWind chillers. Made in the USA and use better compressors..Yeah, there is a reason they cost more.

Totally agree. Those chillers use Copeland or Tecumseh compressors. American refridgeration goodness.

My 1/5 Aquanetics (now Aqualogic) drop in chiller is 13yrs old and still going strong. I became the second owner almost 7 yrs ago. It has a Tecumseh compressor in it.

Mine is all black though.

well...i got the 1/4 HP Arctica.
I love it....my temp has been 80-82 for the last few days.

I had to tweak the heater a little bit...now all is good.
