Hi all!! I have recently started my new aquarium. Thanks to Natalie BTW! I am curious about the club and have printed out the application. Do you update the website with the new meeting dates or is it here on the forum?

Welcome to the forum! One major thing about this hobby is patience!!!! It's can get very expensive and addictive... :)

Lori welcome to the site and the club. There are alot of good people here with tremendous amounts of knowledge and experience, use it to your advantage. You will find alot of good deals on here and alot of times some really good friends. I wish you the best in the hobby and like others have mentioned be patient and have fun thats what its all about anyway.

i am new as well and have found very helpful info from the forum. I think an addiction is an understatement for this hobby.lol. I didnt think it would be as fun as it is. Good luck with the tank!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yes patience is a virtue that I lack in large quantities but I am learning. There is just so much out there that I want to have. My better half is already looking at a bigger tank and he isn't the one in the hobby. LOL!

Aquaman- I am building a very small reef with a top capacity of 2 very small fish. My tank is an 8 gal Oceanic Biocube.

When is the next meeting?

The 125 sounds challenging...I was really just wanted to get my feet wet, not committ to swimming. Which everyone that knows me finds this new addiction totally hilarious, I was bitten by a shark as a child and won't go in the water!!!

Welcome again, and the next meeting is going to be at my house in Murfreesboro on Friday the 18th of Sept from 6pm till 9pm or until I put on my PJ's. look for more details in the sept meeting thread going up later today.

Norman,
Thanks for the information. I will try to attend and get to put faces with signatures.
Do I need to bring anything? Snacks, fish, corals????

Lori,

I see a lot of new reefers buying corals here and there when they've just reached the final cycling stage. Some of these corals needs a very well established tank to survive. An un-established tank is very unforgiving for the newbies. Patience is needed!!!!! There's several newer reefers in this forum that have done the same and they pretty much lost everything in their tank because they couldn't wait. Something to think about with your new purchases recently!!!! Another thing is do your research on the specific coral your purchasing, do you know the needs of the specific coral? Must do all that before doing your purchase! Good Luck!

to add to what Michael said, think of your tank this way:

It is something you grow..not something you set up. Tak your time and it will be well worth it!

I know you guys are right. I have only purchased one coral and it is sitting in the original owners aquarium for several more weeks before I pick it up. I have offered to purchase others but I am always a little after the crowd. I guess it is for the best at this stage but watch out world in a few more months.
I have been doing research on lighting and food requirements for each of the corals I would like to have. The one I bought is a pink leather and hopefully I won't kill it. If you guys knew my record on house plants you would have sympathy for the coral.

Several weeks does not mature a tank! It can take months! I've seen too many rush in and do well at first then crash later then come back on here and ask why. Leather are a bit more tolerant so you should be fine since you already bought it.

To tell you the truth it is not always time as much as it is some other things. I know people that setup tanks and have some coral do great right away and others who have had tanks for years and still kill them. The thing you need to see if your tank is ready for the specific coral and some time it is a trial and error but the thing to do is to start with more common types first then move to the more expensive. Try putting a common leather in first we have more of that in the club so you should be able to get them for $10 or less if not call me. Also try gsp and some other stuff then maybe try a cap then move to some of the basic acros. If you come to the meeting this month you should be able to get some to start with.

On the other hand if your comment about plants is because you were not diligant at taking care of the plants then you may want to think about the sps as they are a lot more work then some of the soft stuff.

I still have several more weeks to pick up the coral. I have no intention of purchasing expensive corals just to watch them die. The leather was cheap and I felt not a bad choice to start with. Hopefully it will be forgiving while I figure it all out. After that I think I will just sit back and see. There are so many amazing and beautiful possibilities that it will take me a while to research what I want to add.

At this point, I listen to the water moving thru the system, watch the lights play across my live rock and test water. Not a bad start and rather relaxing. I have had to find a sedate indoor hobby since the stroke and I hope this is it.
