New To Marine Tanks

Hey All,

I have been a freshwater aquarist for nearly a decade, raising a fair amount of North American game fish as well as some South American beauties.

I am very interested in starting a marine tank but admittedly have shied away from it because I lack much knowledge on them. My buddy referred me to this site and I am impressed so far but suffering from a bit of information overload.

I am thinking about starting both a 75 gallon and a nanotank within the next year. I am a firm believer in well-planned tanks and would like to benefit from your collected experience.

What are some "must read" resources for someone switching from fresh to marine tanks? Also, for anyone who has made a similar transition, what do you wish you had known prior to setting up your marine tank?

Thanks in advance!

Skip the nano at first. Although starting out with a nano is possible, larger tanks are more forgiving and therefore are easier to start out with.

There are some very good stickies at the top of this forum as well as the fish disease and reef chemistry forums. good luck.

Make sure you read the "Must Know Reed Chemistry" sticky as well as the one concerning setting up a new tank. They will really fill you in on everything you need to know.

I jsut entered the hobby about 3 months ago after about 4-5 months of planning and gausering equipment (not long by the standards of a lot of folks) for a 65. You will have to make some big decisions as well. Things like whether to purchase Live Rock or not (I did and loved it). Whether to use a refugium. Whether you want to go FOWLR or SPS or softies etc...

Feel free to message me if you have any questions and get ready for your adventure!
