hi all
im new to the idea of having a nano tank.
ive had some experince with a 550 liter reef tank but due to being very inexperinced and listening to a dodgy aquarium owner who only cared about the money was not really what i would consider a success..

so after a couple thousand dollars massive coral losses and fish losses new home a couple of children later im ready do dive back in..

im hoping with all the experinced people on here i can get some great advice on where to start what im going to be dealing with in a nano...

any help or advice welcomed..
cheers

In order to offer suggestions,
What size tank?
Are you going to run a sump?
Are you wanting to run a refugium?
Are you willing to do weekly water changes?
What kind of corals and livestock do you want to keep?

tank size= undecided as yet
sump= yes
refugium= yes
water change= yes
coral= not sure but would like a few pros and cons
fish= clowns to start go from there

Corals
Pro- beautiful and so fun to buy. Peaceful to look at and amazing to watch grow
Cons- they need care. water changes and can be a lot of work. you don't have to go buy hundreds of dollars in SPS. start put with some cheap zoas and softies and go from there.

Nanos are acutally pretty easy if you design and setup from the start easy.

Depending on the size will determine what equipment is recommended. But I would not do a nano without an ATO. They are a life saver.

Skimmer may or may not be needed. Once again this depends on the size. Anything less than 20 gallons, weekly water changes will suffice.

For lights, I would go with LEDs. With nanos, it wont be that cost heavy and one less thing to worry about.

But I think first thing you need to do is determine what your plans are with the tank, such as size, what type of corals, the fish you want and how much maintenance you are willing to put into it.

so after much reading ive decided on a 75 liter tank (20 gallons)
if that gives more info for some feedback id love to here it..
cheers

I'm very new to nano as well. Many years back best luck was with a 15 gallon. Right now have 3 very simplistic setups. My current 14 is my prized, admit abit overstocked, but learned a lot, at start very frequent water changes in nanos needed. Go easy deciding your direction. I elected mushrooms and a soft coral, hardy specimens as Nemo Clown, and a Dwarf Angel, Cleaner Shrimp and Turbo Snail latter aided in algae blooms. System now is about 8 months stabilizing. Down to weekly to 10 day water changes at or just over 10 percent as needed. Learned to go easier on feedings tho frequent.

20 Gallon could be an excellent choice, knowing now might have been a 30. Good Luck, enjoying mine!

I'm still learning, just sharing my experience todate.

Mine couple months back, added another mushroom to fill rear, is abit over crowded here.
