New to Nanos

I have a 10 gallon (new) all set up. I am putting 2 x 40 watts PC lighting on it. I know I can keep the usual softies..but was wondering how far I can stretch my limits getting into some beginner LPS, possible small clam and some basic hard corals. Any suggestions or comments appreciated. My last tank was a 30 gallon with about 250 +/- watts of PC and I had good luck with most everything (softies and a bubble anenome)...

Ive been running a Fluval 304 and a Maxi-jet 600 on it for turn-over and filtering, no skimmer (yet, my others are to big) and have about 8- 11lbs. of live rock. Parameters are good and it's crystal clear.

Thanks for the input...

good job bill, if you ever consider keeping sps I have a thread and pictures of a 70 watt halide set up on page two of this forum. Just a suggestion, you could use a sump or refugium to help with any load you might get. good luck to you and keep on reefin.........Frankie06

I had a 2x40w retro setup on my 10g for about 10 mos. It is a mixed reef including zoos, Mushrooms, LPS (candycane) and SPS. Everything did very well including my Green Acropora. Color lightened up a little by grew very well and looks very healthy. Also keeping Green Birdsnest coral

And now on 12-12-05:

In November 05 I upgraded to a 96w quad and the growth rate has increased even more.

You should be good for softies and LPS with that lighting. SPS would work near the top of the tank. Don't think you have enough light for a clam though.

Thanks for the replys.... Looks like it should keep me pretty optimistic.. Nice photos too... Once I get a few things in, and established I'll put up some photos too...

I think you answered your own questions dude ;)

But just to put your mind to ease you can probably get away with keeping most corals in 10 gallon with 80 watts of lighting! 10 gallon tanks are only about a foot deep (give/take sand) so light doesn't have to penetrate very far. Make sure your height placement of corals/clams is according to their lighting demands.

I would also throw in another 5 lbs. of LR :P ... LR is very important in nano's because it helps the water maintain pH not to mention filtration.

Congratulations on going uber nano! Welcome to RC!

Thanks much... I will be adding some more rock...my older tank had a lot of rock I didn't like so I thought I might be a bit more picky this time around. Plus, since I still have corals to buy I want to see what I have for room and what some of them might arrive on...

thanks again,

Bill
