Hi to Greater "Northern" Minnesotans! I'm the new lady that got the 55 gal. aq. from BlennieLuvr. I don't know what I'm doing with salt water yet - but hope to learn. I've had (do have a 30 g. freshwater) but have always wanted salt. Hope I dont
ask too many questions of you guys! Yikes, Look out.

Welcome. There is alot to learn but don't be afraid to ask questions. and always remember there is not a dumb question.
Are you going to be able to make it to the meeting on Feb.3rd?

Hi "Home Depot". Thanks for the reply. I'm still trying to figure out how to reply to this online forum. Haven't used them. Hope you get this. I spoke with Blennie (does anyone use real names?) this evening and she mentioned the mtg. but didnt really say where it was... we started talking about other salt related things. I think that it is at her house...am I correct?

Yes it is at her house on the 3rd. I don't care if my name is used but not sure about the others. My name is Garrett

Hi Garrett.
No I haventgotten in touch with him. Thought I'd get to it this evening but worked late. I dont know when the best time to get ahold of him is.
Blennie suggested my calling him. So, for the time being, my new "used " tank is sitting on the dining room floor. I think I want to put sand rather than the crushed coral as substrate. Good idea or bad? Blennie said she used some live rock and "play" sand mixed but Im not sure where to get ithe play sand.I also need some rock as well. Also I have a Magnum 350 canister filter I'd like to use with this tank. Can it be done?

I will see Randy tomorrow night and will ask him if it would be ok to give you his number. I don't think it would be but have to ask.
As far as sand goes I have a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 full that I don't need anymore. I am sure we can work out something for that if you wanted.

As far as the filter I am the wrong gut to ask on that. I have not used any filters for years. just alot of flow in your tank anf live rock. When I first started out I used one but then I was having trouble with stff and was told "does the ocean have a hang on filter.....no it uses the waves and liverock" SO I took off my filter and have not used it since. but that is just me so that is why I said I am not the guy to ask about it...LOL

Was it live sand or play sand. Listen to me... I'm still trying to figure out what to call this stuff.. i did get the skimmer, lights and a powerhead (I think that's what it is called.) What more do I need? Melissa

Melissa
It was live sand but I dryed it all out so it is dead. But you can always get like a cup or 2 from someone to seed it to make it live.

That would get you started Just need to add water, salt, LR(live rock) and sand

I have also got some base rock(dead rock) that I will not need anymore not much but some. and that to will become live after awhile in the tank with some LR.

Garrett

Garrett, I'd love to take you up on your offer. I'd pay you for whatever it is worth/ You said you'd see Randy soon...are you coming to Park Rapids? Are you in Bemidji?

Glad to see you got on here Melissa.

I want to clarify about her using that filter. She doesn't plan to use any media in it, just wants to use it to push some water around since it's able to do 350 gal/hr. Any thoughts? I can't think of reason she shouldn't try it since she has it. She also has a power head from my first setup that is bad need of coralline removal.

welcome Melissa. My name is Brad and I am also new to the saltwater world, started on labor day. Had fresh water for many years. have a 75 to set up but do not know where to start. currently have a 30 gal reef.

Hey milissa, schaver here from park rapids, yea id be happy to give you a hand setting your tank up,I think its ok to use your 350 mag to move water and filter it untill your tank is up and running good, then remove it if need be.
Randy

Hi Randy, I'd love any help with the new tank set-up. I can give you a call and maybe we can get together.. I don't work weekends. Blennie gave me your email address. I will get you my address & pone.

Hi, I'm Jodi, in Bemidji too.

You can make a remote type of refugium with your canister, with some chunks of LR (albeit small ones) and cheato (algae) and a small LED light.

Hi Jodi,
I don'k know much about a refugium... I'v heard about them but don't know any more than that. Besides adding a little more water, what is the purpose?
Thanks for the info, Jodi.
Melissa

Because in a refugium you use a combination of more live rock, sand, and different types of macro algaes usually. The purpose is when they are all used correctly it is a natural filtration system for your reef tank well still letting important trace minerals through. If you use a hang on filter or box filter it pulls alot of the nutrients in the water out, which is not a good thing for reef tanks.

...I don't know what I'm doing with salt water yet - but hope to learn...

Welcome!! You are starting off in a very good postilion. When I started my first reef tank back in the fall of 2000, I relied on my LFS for all my information. Bad move on my part. Then I discovered Reefs.org and Reef Central. I totally started over again. And here I am today.

You have to ask questions or you simply won't know. Also, getting into the pool is a better than standing on the edge looking in. Meaning, start the tank and you will make mistakes, it's a given. But I implore you to research your decisions ahead of time. I still do.

Hope to see you at the meeting!!
