Hello everyone my name is Bryan. I currently have a 56g freshwater thank that I am thinking about converting over to a reef tank. If not this tank maybe going bigger to a 110g cause i hear the bigger the tank the easier it is to take care of. Now to the fun stuff i just started doing my homework on reef keeping but am a little overwhelmed by it all and do not really know where to start. I do plan on running a protein and a sump, but not sure if i want to have my fuge in my sume or on its own. the area that i am having trouble grasping is plumbing the tank and how to being. If you guys/girls could give me any feedback or any advice where or how to get started or articles i should read please do I am hoping to start putting together a tank after the first of the year, but starting from ground zero knowledge wise.

Yes, larger tanks are easier to maintain proper levels due to the increased water volume.

However, nothing is free and while it is easier to maintain it is equally harder to bring it back from mistakes. Everything isn't always as it seems and often people feel like the system is performing great only to find that they weren't exporting enough nutrients and the calcium substrate in the tank has spent the last year binding phosphates. This has masked the problem until now and unfortunately it is harder to correct than mess up so you will do the correct thing for a year and a half or throw an absurd amount money and elbow grease at it.

Things you need to look into...

What you want to keep
Feeding
Nutrient Export
Lighting requirements
Flow requirements

We can help with all that but before you do anything decide on a realistic budget and browse the tank of the month systems. Find what you like then see if you can afford to do it (it will take a LOT of experience and resources to match those systems). None of these systems start out perfect.

Buy the right gear the first time. Go ahead and wash away any hint of anything temporary.

It totally makes sense that it is harder to rebound is a large tank. I have started to think a lot about what i want to keep there is so much out there and so many things that can and cannot go together is a little overwhelming but something i plan doing and listing what i want to better plan my tank.

Once i have that figured out is when i planned on really dialing in on the specifics of what i will get and setup.

I am just very anxious to get into the hobby and convert over from fresh water that is why i was thinking about something temporary just to get started and get my feet wet and used to salt water. i have thought about getting on of the biocubes in the mean time while i save up for the main reef tank that i will piece together. Do you guys have any experience with those??
