New to the area

I just moved from NC to B'ham (Crestwood) and took my old 135 and an Oceanic 37G cube tank. I have yet to set them up as I have not been motivated yet. Also, are there any SW pet shops close to the Crestwood area?

I took down my last tank and sold off everything before I moved. So, I will need to find some coral frags in the future and a pair of true perculas.

Welcome to Birmingham. Too bad you didn't get to bring that 625 with you. That was a nice set up you had. You should join us at the next CARC(Central Al. Reef Club) meeting.
There are quite a few LFS here in town. There are 2 in Hoover, one is Aquarium Designs it's in Patton Creek shopping center(that's behind the Galleria) the other is Aquarium Imports on hwy 31 back up towards I-65, behind Wachovia Bank. There is Sarris Underwater Creations in Bessemer off of I-459 exit 6 behind Arby's. Tropical Pet Cove in Alabaster take I-65 South to exit 238 go right about a mile turn left on Hwy 119 its about 4 miles on the right.
That oughta keep you busy for the better part of a day.
There's also a few stores in Anniston but I'm not familiar with them. I think the one everyone likes is called Valley Tropical Pets.

Just spent the better part of an hour looking through your 655G experience - when and where was that? Very interesting stuff indeed.

I too just read through your page, welcome to B'ham and as ToyTek said come join us for a meeting it would be great having.

Toytek, we bought a smaller home in Crestwood and there was no place to put that tank. I would have loved to keep the tank. I sold it to one of the local Charlotte guys though it is still in my other house just stting there empty since he is building a house and is not ready for it yet. And, thanks for all of the LFSs. My wife and I do enjoy visiting various SW shops. I will try and check to see if any are open today (Labor Day).

ThePhytoMan, I had that tank up for the past 3 years in the Charlotte area. I belonged to the local club there (still a member) - http://www.rasoc.org (still a member of the Maryland club as well http://www.cmas-md.org). I will definitely look for upcoming meetings of the CARC.

Nitroq2, as long as my wife and I are free to get there, we'll probably be there.

welcome to the area.
As for local LFS, the closest to you is going to be Aquarium Imports in Hoover. This is the store I use for fish. They are not the cleanest store, and their space is cramped, but they have good quality livestock. Their coral selection is a bit limited, though, so you may have to check out other stores or buy online.

Off Subject, I noticed that you are a Ron Paul supporter. I am, also. Have you checked out the Birmingham Ron Paul meetup group?

phunckie, I was unable to make it out this weekend (in terms of pet shops). I am debating if I would like to setup the 37G cube or the 135G. Being the tang lover that I am, I will have a hard time setting up a tank without one. I may just setup the 37G in my office with a couple of clowns and a blenny along with some LPS and softies. Then, I can setup the 135 at home with a few tangs. I had five of them in there before. I had to fight for my life with the tang police around here though.

As for the Ron Paul Meetup group, I have already signed up for the Birmingham group. I am still settling in but might be able to make it to Nick's BBQ place this Thursday.

Mark, that's weird. Thanks for the information though. I have yet to really venture much. It will not be long though. I just have to make the decision above. I also have a 30 Breeder. Since I kept all of my equipment from the last tank (a bunch of tunzes, lumenarcs, cal reactor, kalk reactor, MH bulbs, VHO bulbs, Eheim pumps, MTC HSA3000 skimmer, ASM G2 skimmer, Iwaki 100, many lbs of very large tonga branch, etc.), I am leaning toward setting up the 135 again. I just need to get started.

BTW, how much are dues to the local club?

fyi, Aquarium Imports IS open on Monday. They are closed on Sunday.....

As for Thursday, we'll be there, so I hope to see you.....

I have a 110g, and I'm currently looking for a 6' tank. I love tangs, and would like to have a 6' tank, so I can keep a couple (or more:D )

Well, I may be coerced into selling it though it is 5' 8" long. But, I have the stand and matching canopy for it. And, it's all cherry.

Ohh yeah, oops... The other three are closed on Mon.
I never can remember Aquarium Imports' hours. They close kinda early on Saturdays too, I think around 5:00. So I don't make it in there much.
If you're up for a drive, you should check out Coral Reef Aquatics in North Alabama.

That's probably close enough to 6'....
If you decide to sell, let me know. I'd like to talk to you about it.....

coral reef aquatics is worth the drive. nice trip to take on a sunday since they are closed on saturday for the next three months

Well, I am sure that by joining the club, I will have a chance to visit the stores through tours or meetings at the stores. My wife and I are just about done with the boxes. Though everything is not in its respective place yet, we are almost settled into the home here.

phunckie, the tank is just sitting in my garage and is the same one that you see on my website under 135G tank link. It was used as the sump on my last tank, so there are holes in it now that were not in it before since I drilled a few extras. I have a solution for closing up the non-essential ones and keeping the essential ones.
