Welcome to the club, Brian. Let's just not beat around the bush and get you a system you'll enjoy for at least two years before wanting to upgrade. Can't go less than a 500 gallon, full blown reef. That should get you at least two years

I'd recommend something between a 50 and 75 for a starter. Smaller is not easier when it comes to salt water (parameters fluctuate too easily). Someone's signature here once was "The solution to pollution is dilution". Regulatory people don't like hearing that, but for reef junkies it makes perfect sense. Are you more interested in big predator like fish (lions, angels, triggers, eels, etc.), or the color of a reef?

Well that takes some of the fun out of it. Do you like flowy things in a reef (that's usually where people start, as softies, leathers and zoas are more forgiving)? I would suspect no one starts off liking SPS... You can spend some money in this hobby, but if you ask questions here, you should walk away feeling better about any purchase, or at least know the drawbacks to a certain piece of equipment. If you're like me, I hate buying twice. Of course, that means I pay more upfront, so that has to be balanced, too.

If you've not yet, check out the sticky at the top of the New to the Hobby forum. Definitely start reading up (I personally researched for 6 months before buying
) and the single most important thing in a reef tank period is patience!
And most definitely don't be afraid to ask questions.

Welcome Brian! Yes take your time with researching and finding what plans you are going to take from setup, maintanance to livestock. Also remember a reef tank is like a race car; the faster you go the harder you crash.

Let me know when you're ready to go. I have kenya trees, cabbage leather, some xenia, and devils hand frags sitting in my frag tank waiting for someone to love them... and in my experience, these are pretty much bulletproof starting corals.
In fact, the cabbage leather was the first coral I got when I "rescued" a tank from a girl whose boyfriend had left her and the tank. She didn't know what she was doing and had been topping off with saltwater. I'm not sure what the salinity actually was because I didn't have a refractometer at that point, but let's just say the swing arm on my hydrometer floated so fast it nearly flew off...
