New to the Nano reef

Ok, there are 3 different type of rock: base, deco, coral. Which should I go with, and is there any way to let them know I have a nano and that I need smaller than normal rock?

www.premiumaquatics.com is another good place, I got 30 pounds of Marshall Island.
The TBS rock is nice, plucked right from the ocean days before you get it but it can have things like mantis shrimp in it which most people consider a pest.

The only reason I went with Premium Aquatics is because they were close enough that if I picked ground shipping it would still get here next day, saved me a ton on shipping costs.

The best option would be to check out this local reef forum and ask where everyone gets their rock from. Maybe someone has some extra laying around they will sell or knows of a good local place.

It's not worth it to pay $60+ in shipping rock to you :)

Colinadam,

I am going back to the woman's parents house now to grab the cube. Is the build-date sticker in plain view on the back? Just want to know if I have to search around for it a bit.

Thanks

Gotcha. It says "2006 11". I am assuming that it was made in November of 2006. So I shouldn't (crossing fingers) have any cracking problems. I am going to start taking pics now for my build thread. Anyone know how to resize them so I can post them on here? I am so bad at that stuff that my myspace pic is still the "shaded, blank guy" picture.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just opened the stand box. Outside it was checked as a 24g stand. But when I opened it up, half the bolts and screws and such were missing and it looked pretty small. On top of it, the instructions in the box are for the 12g.

Go to photobucket.com, make an account and upload the there. When your done uploading there will be your picture with 3 http links, chose the bottom one, it's called the image tag or something. Just copy and paste the entire tag into your message and it will display the picture.

The instructions are always for the 12, it's a way they save money since it's the same stand (12 & 24 are the same and built the same). Odds are it's a 24.

I measured the dimensions and they are the same for the 12g stand on the jbj website. I am trying to contact the guy now (ACI corp---aquarium consultants int'l----or something like that).

But at this point it doesn't matter, since the screms are the wrong ones (pointed tip,, instead of flat to insert into the "X" faced holders....and the x-faced holders are not there.

Wow...sorry to hear about the stand issues...never the less, keep the faith...it will work out...hopefully if this ACI company is worth their reputation they will drop ship you a new one...or at least have JBJ drop ship you one at no costs...I would see if they can do 2-day delivery and include a return address label for UPS so you don't have to pay to ship the thing back...

Post a link to your build thread...I'd like to tag along... :)

I kind of bit the bullet and just put it together with what was given to me. It seems pretty sturdy, but the measurements are weird. JBJ has measurements for the 12 and 24g stand on its site. This stand is a bit smaller than the 24g stand, but a bit bigger than the 12g stand. Either I am measuring incorrectly or Colinadam is right and it is a 24g stand. I opened the cube and it did come with the surface skimmer. So I was happy to see that.

Now, it also came with a white box with a black apparatus in it. It had:110v/60Hz 36W LED? Are these the "blue" lights? and if so, how do I attach them to the hood?

Also, the info you guys were giving me before about taking things out and putting things in the 3 chambers in the back, you talked about chamber 1,2, and 3. If I am facing the front of the cube, which chamber is number 1 (better yet...what chamber # is the stock pump already in)?

HR...definitely, as soon as I snap enough pics, I will be sure to throw a build thread up.

Does the black item from the white box have 2 cords coming out of it? If so that's the ballast. Needs to be plugged into the cords for the lights in the back of the system. Watch out though! They are not interchangable so make sure you match them up right.

Yeah it was the ballast. AND, good look ahead Colinadam...I couldn't figure out why the lights would come on for a sec and shut off. It wasn't lined up right.

God, I'm excited. My shipment of the MaxiJet and heaters is coming by saturday. After I hook that stuff up, I'm off to get the water, rock and sand.

I will keep you guys posted if anything arises or if i have any other quest....oh yeah....did you wipe out your cube with anything when it arrived? I used a wet paper towel and then dried it. There was some dark stuff on the towel, seemed like dust. But it seemed to work.

Just wiping it out with a damp cloth should work fine.

Do you see how the pump is in there and what you will need to do to get the maxijet in there?

Hopefully everything makes sense now that you can see it.

Hi, I have been reading through some threads and I am in pretty much the same position. I just got the 24g nano cube and ordered the max jet setup. here is a link does this seem to be the right thing?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl.../search.dll?from=R40&satitle=7711618663&fvi=1

Also, the skimmer seams pretty cheap... how does it attach doesnt appear to clamp on anywhere. As soon as the pump arrives i will be heading to get the water and LR to get this going. thanks!!

Hi Greg,

That e-bay auction looks like a good product but you could have done it cheaper yourself.

The Maxijet1200 is like $20 on most online places. The Y connector is the only thing that you would have to get and it can be found here:
http://www.modularhose.com/

I ordered a kit from these guys today that will do the same thing and should have it Thursday.

You'll have to let us know how you like it when you get it going, overall it looks great, especially since you can get everything at one place.

Also the skimmer stays on by water pressure, when you turn off the powerhead it will fall off.

Thanks for the quick reply!! Im hoping to get mine friday so I can get building. Does the Y connector attach easily? simple plug n play? also my tank hangs over the stand about an inch or 2 ... the directions say make sure nothing hangs over. do you think this is a problem?

My tank and stand are flush on all sides. I would be worried that it would cause the tank to not be level and put extra pressure on parts of the cube (causing cracks, etc...).

Is it the nanocube stand or something else?

The Y should attatch easily, I've never had a problem with my stock nozzle falling off.

It looks very similar to the nano cube stand but definitly not the one made by JBJ. I think I am going to return and get the JBJ version. Hopefully that one fits flush on all sides. thanks!!
