New to the Nano reef

Oh, should I just dump them in the water from the bag they are in (there is a bit of water in their bags and some paper towels... obviously I wouldn't put the paper towel in)? Or should I scoop them out by hand and put them in?

Easiest way to upload is this...

Create an account on www.photobucket.com ...the reason I suggest them is because they will format the pics for you...

It is pretty self-explanatory to create an account there...then you can create folders and sub-folders to organize all of your pics...you upload a picture, and when it is done uploading you can see the picture at the bottom of your screen...if you look at that picture, you will see 3 links/website addresses below it...if you highlight and copy the last one down, it is already formatted for these forums including the tags and everything...

So, you then come back to your response, paste it, and when you hit submit your pics will show up...I usually skip a line in between each pic just to make it look good... :)

Hope that helps...

I have a photobucket account. Thats how Iposted the other pics. But even that was confusing to me. Ugh...I am so tech impaired.

And to think I do almost all my legal research online.

Take them out by hand and "plop" them in your cube...NEVER, I repeat NEVER put ANY water from an outside source in to your tank...of course, I am not referring to water you buy specifically for top offs and water changes...but I am referring to water that comes with your creatures from another source...

You have no idea what is in their water...could be something like meds that have copper in them and the copper will wipe your entire tank in a matter of hours to days depending on the amount...or, you could introduce Ich, or something else...

Long story short, only put water from your trusted LFS where you buy it in to your cube (at least until you buy an RO/DI unit and then never put anyone's water but your own in to your system.) :)

I've seen this happen before and I think I know what happened...when you were doing your reply, did you hit the IMG button up above? If you did, that is what's wrong...this IMG button adds the image tags to the website address for the pic...when you copy the 3rd one down from PhotoBucket, it already has these tags with it...

So, just copy from PhotoBucket and paste it straight away in to the reply window without using the IMG button...that is the easiest and simplest way to do it... ;)

Just went to a local fish store to get food for the flame angel, also picked up a red firefish, darn this hobby :)

I think I am maxed out now....

Red Firefish
Flame Angel
Blue Assesor
Blue Bar Pseudochromis
Yellow Watchman Goby
Blue Neon Goby

Yikes.....

Hopeful,

I believe that is what I did when I was trying to post the pics. I will have to check it out and see if I can do it.

Also guys,

Did any of your snails in your cleaner crews climb "out" of your tank? I have about 7 working their way up the glass and one in the back almost up and over the back and into chamber 2. Just wondering if this is normal.

Also also,

My temp is at about 78.5 F. My heater is set at about 72 and it still doesn't drop the temp. I think the temp in the apartment ranges from 68-72. Not sure how to bring the temp down (aside from a chiller, which I'd rather not have to deal with). I thought that proper temp range was 72-78F. Any ideas, concerns, comments on this?

I keep the heater set at 79 in the tank... I have a digital therm so the temp hovers in between 79-80. House temp is at 66-68 degrees.

Colin, cant believe you have 6 fish. Thats awesome so everything is ok no PH issues? I always hear people saying 4 fish...

Guys,

I feel like the biggest idiot. It wasn't the chemi-clean creating the cloud. When I did the 1st water change on sunday night, I didn't add enough water back in to the tank. It was just a little under, so the pump was pulling in small amounts of air and blowing them out as tiny bubbles. I just filled it correctly (I think). Where is your water level in the 3rd chamber everybody? Halfway up, 3/4 way up, etc.

Nerite is the only snail that will climb above the water line but it is only for short periods and will never make it out.

I keep my reef @ 82 but most keep them closer to around 80.

It is best to get it between 78 & 80 but the main thing is limiting the temp swings, that can shock and even kill the fish.

Get a couple readings of your temp throughout the day and see how it varies. It really shouldn't vary more than a degree or 2 day or night.

I keep my water level in the third chamber between 3/4 and full, it varies due to the little evaporation that takes place throughout the week.

Yeah 6 is pushing it but I have a neon goby that is so small I don't even count him as a fish, plus the YWG stays in the sand, the pseudo stays in the rocks, so I'll only have 3 (flame, firefish, assesor) that will hang out in the open. Now if I had 6 sand burrowers or 6 that would ocupy the same space then yeah, that's bad.....

The temp is not a problem...I keep mine at 79...once I get a few more corals in the tank, I'm gonna up it to around 81 through the day and 79-80 at night...I've read that this is better for coral growth since it simulates the warmer water temps closer to the surface of the ocean...as long as you are doing fish only, 74-78 is a decent temp...but with corals, you definitely need to have it more like 79-82...

Hopeful,

When you said the light should be on a timer, what should the "light shifts" be? Right now the lights are on from about 8am to 10pm. Then the moonlights go on throughout the night. Should it ever be totally dark, i.e., no lights?

I have actually seen a bit of green starting to grow on the rocks that I am assuming is algae. Is this because of the lights being on?

It doesn't need to be totally dark. I have my lights on for 12 hours, off for 12 hours.

My rock got green before the purple coraline algae took off. I think the green is a base for the coraline.

As for the algae first of all, some say yes some say no...PC lights I believe are what come stock in the Nano Cubes, correct? If so, the spectrum of light is slightly different with PCs...because of this, people will get nuisance algaes more quickly than people without PCs...no worries, its all normal during a cycle...your cleanup crew will take care of it sooner or later... ;)

As for the timers...I usually prefer to turn the moonlights on about 15 minutes before the lights shut off and then shut them off 15 minutes after the lights come on the next morning...digital timers work great for this...this is just my personal preference, and I'm sure 50 other people will have 100 different ways to light their tanks as well... as for darkness, I never like a tank that is dark (except for those that don't have moonlights. ;) )

Its only a tiny bit, and its like a fine grass. Its on the rock closest to the light. Thats why I thought the light had something to do with it.

Man, the cleaning crew doesn't mess around. I had originally put them on the sand, and then thought I should have dropped them on the rocks as well, but they are already working their way up the tiers.

Colin, how often do you change the purigen? Sorry, the question is a bit off topic, but I forgot to ask it when I was adding it on sunday night.
