how often do you remove the sponges and how do you clean them?

I have a RSM 250 and I took out the sponge on the right side altogether and cut the left side one in half.

I try to clean it well about every 2 months; ideally you do it every water change though.

I just put it in my bucket of dirty tank water and squeeze it a bunch to get gunk out. Then I run it in the sink until water comes off clear.

I'd only remove them once... and then throw them away!
