New to the site, hopefully a mantis owner soon

Hello all I have a few questions about mantis shrimp. I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now and I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy.

I live in California (North Bay Area) and search results for a local seller have been coming up empty. I really don't like taking the risk on shipping from out of state as its typically 2 or 3 times the cost and usually the animal is the only guarantee. On to the questions!

1. Does anyone know of a local pet store or member from Cali that has a mantis shrimp for sale?

2. I'm leaning more towards a spearer than a smasher- is one easier to keep over the other?

3. Acrylic tank or glass? I own all glass tanks and the only acrylic I've owned sprung a leak on a front side seam- it was a slow leak but I ended up tossing the tank because it progressively got worse as I fixed a section (110g tank too) I don't want to run into that problem again!

4. Depending on species, what tank size would house a mantis shrimp for life? Would something in the 20-30g range suffice for most?

As far as species go, I've been reading through the list stickied in this forum. With the shortage of available mantis shrimp in my area, I'm thinking I would be better off not setting my sights on one specific type, rather going with whatever is available at the time. Maybe I will just start buying out all the live rock and hope I get a hitch hiker:D

Thanks for reading

i would not go with glass as they can brake the glass with ease if they wanted to

95% of the mantis out there could not break a glass tank. there are only 2 species out there that i have heard of with the power to break a glass tank and even then they need to be larger and the cases of peope reporting there tank broken are far and few.

After researching some more, I get the impression that glass will not be a problem.

Still haven't found a place to buy the mantis shrimp from yet though- anyone have a lead I can follow?

Cost wise with shipping, I'm looking at close to $100 for a peacock/clown on a specimen I don't get to choose from or even see an actual picture of

Someone out there in Cali must have one for sale!!!

Can't seem to find the post...looked up members and the closest was 328mike...hasn't posted since 2005 though. Thanks for the heads up though...I will search the trading post later tonight.

if you do decide on a glass tank for a peacock the best thing to do is line the bottom of the tank with a piece of acrylic. that is were the tank gets smacked the most and it is not intentional. they smack when they are eating or trying to dig to make there home bigger.

Finally.....my new Pseudosquilla ciliata has arrived!

He goes about 4" and is lime green.

Now I'm working on getting Lysiosquillina maculata...maybe a pair :)

Good luck finding the female man, i've been looking for a mate for my male almost 3 months now. Who did you end up getting your ciliata from? 408mike?
