New Tunze 6040... A Review

Just wanted to give an honest review of the new Tunze stream 6040 controllable pump.

Here are my initial impressions upon inspection...

1. The pump and controller are both small but it's a good thing. Nobody likes a bulky pump taking up precious real estate.

2. Quality is excellent what you would expect from Tunze.

3. Packaging was straight forward and boxed nicely with seperate bags for items. Not that it matters to most but the cardboard box is pretty flimsy. Maybe they should go to a thicker box but all the Tunze products have the same flimsy box lol.

4. Controller looks nice and easy to adjust.

Getting things going...

Getting everything hooked up was straightforward and simple. I have the controller mounted in my stand in the electronics section and it looks like it belongs. Installing the pump is easy as it uses a magnet and has little rubber shock absorbers to relieve vibrations.

During operation...

For such a small pump it really delivers a punch. I have mine maxed out in my 60 gallon and it really moves. The flow deflector really helps to get the flow where you want it. I was able to even make a little wave action in wave mode. Flow is wide and turbulent I'd say about 10" wide. Pretty good for a 2.5" pump. Running at 100% it is a like louder than I thought it would be. It's not as loud as the MP10 but its not silent either.

Things I wish Tunze would have done different...

1. The flow deflector is not adjustable without complete removal of the pump. I thought you could adjust during operation but that's not the case. It must be pushed on in the desired position.

2. It's distracting in wave mode. It moves a lot even with the magnet. During wave mode at 100% and quick pulse it looks like a beating heart on cocaine lol.

3. Tunze uses the color blue for all of its products however I think they should of stuck with black instead of a blue propeller, blue rubber absorbers and a blue trimmed magnet. It's not that bad but is noticeable.

4. No propeller guard. This one I don't understand? A snail could easily get inside and cause havoc! This I think was the biggest error.

So all in all it's a great pump for smaller tanks up to about 75 gallons. They claim up to 132 but you would need like 6 of them to really get decent flow. It's rated for 1190 gph so great for smaller tanks. The retail price of $140 is not bad considering its controllable. It seems to have plenty of different settings much like the vortech's do but I haven't had time to read up or change the settings much yet. It does have a feed mode that shuts the pump down for 10 min. I got the pump 15% off ($119) from a vendor so a good buy especially for a Tunze pump.
It's not as sexy as the MP10 or quite as powerful (1190gph compared to 1500). The cord is visible in the tank unlike the Vortech. It is much quieter than the MP10 and provides similar features which is nice. So I'm pretty satisfied so far with the pump. Especially the amount of flow it provides in such a small pump. It was meant to hide behind the aquascape but I have the pump situated up higher because I have a minimalistic look rather than a huge wall of rock.

Here are some pictures...

Pump located in top left hand corner.

Those that are interested in the wave feature I just got it dialed in and it's ridiculous! At max it pushes the water out of the tank lol. I think the wave is better than the MP10 did in my 34g. It's pretty impressive. If you decide to go this route the instructions say to remove the flow deflector and place 2-4" from water surface pointing outflow up. Do not do this unless you want water to shoot out of your tank. I learned the hard way :). I have mine placed in the back corner with outflow facing left and the deflector on. Placed about 4-5" down. The higher up you place it the bigger the wave!

Using one in my cycling 40 breeder and it pushes a lot of water. I haven't tried setting up wave function yet but will be soon. I will be going with a second 6040 as this tank will be full sps when ready. I also like that two can be daisy chained so one controller acts as a master allowing the two pumps to work opposite each other. This pump works so well that I am getting rid of my 6055.

No, you have the use the controller that comes with the pump. The pump cord is directly connected to the controller and can not be detached. The 6040 controller can be plugged into another controller via a cable port on top of the 6040 controller.

The 6025 is the version that does not have controller and is intended for constant use only. Just FYI but the non-electronic Tunzes are not intended to be used with wavemakers, they are designed for constant on flow.
