New Tunze 6205 acting up

Roger,

I just recently purchased a new 6205 to add to my two 6105 streams in my tank and the new pump is acting up. I realize that I'm Canadian and you don't directly deal with us, but your knowledge of the product is unbeatable so i'm hoping you have a suggestion for me.

When first plugged in, the pump runs fine. I am using a 7096 controller and usually for 10 - 20 minutes, I see it running, but then it just stops. Taking it out and replugging it in doesn't fix it. Running it without the controller doesn't change anything. If I try several hours later, it will do the same thing. When it stops working, the power supply cools down, yet the red light is always on it. Then when it starts working again the power supply slightly warms to the touch.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking to repair/replace?

Assuming it is new from one of the last runs in late 2011 (replaced by 6155 in early 2012), my best guess is simply that something is caught between the propeller and shaft so it binds up and triggers a safety shut down, some pumps from late 2010 the drive magnet/prop assembly fit so tight on the shaft that they could not spin, these parts are hand fitted and a new employee was forcing a fit rather than reaming the drive unit as needed to provide clearance, this was rare as more often then not, the parts fit properly without any fitting but their is a deviation of + or - .02mm for the parts and extremes can be tight. Another possibility is that the power connection is loose, for example it will fall out on its own, an adjustment for a tighter connection is possible and very simple.

Hey Roger,

Thanks for in the input. I've triple checked the power connection...it is actually quite tight.

On the safety shutdown...would it re-start on it's own at some point? I will get back to you on the propeller and shaft. If that is it...are there parts still out there. I just bought this new...I see plenty of stores up here still advertising this unit for sale so they must have stock. I also notice the 6155 doesn't have near the volume that this unit has so I'm surprised that it's the replacement.

The parts are all still available. A 6155 is actually stronger, we changed the rating method. At the time the 6205 had come out, meters to measure flow on wide flow pumps had only started to become affordable and that is if you consider the price of a small economy car affordable. We calculated the flow by extrapolating from bag tests of smaller models and using calculations of the displacement of the prop. We now utilize an ultrasound flow meter and comparatively with that meter the 6155 is about 25% stronger, this translates to about 1 more ft of area that the flow will reach. The only other difference would be that the 6205 does have a stronger magnet holder, rated to 1" and the 6155 is to 3/4".

Roger,

I have posted a video of my new 6205 acting up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQDg7SBmjF4

Please watch the full video to see what's happening.

I just had it apart and nothing was stopping the impeller from turning. I compared it to the 6105's and they appear the same.

It's on a 7096 controller asking it to pulse from 30% to 60% and back.

Any advice would be great.

It looks like the fishcare function, every roughly 20 seconds it twitches a bit. Is the controller set up in Interval mode or any mode that would shut it off for a time (sequential as well). Is it possible the potentiometer where you plug in the controller cable is also turned down? This must be at full power when a controller is used.

Hey Roger,
Thanks for the help. The potentiometer is turned to full and always has been. The controller is set to pulse...There is no interval set...just ramp Will try to resetup the controller and see if that does anything.
