new used tank, what to do.

just pick this baby up today. now I still have to buff out some of the scratches, wish me luck. question is, should I use the sump on the back of this tank or should I drill and add a sump under the tank? this is gonna be fish with some corals mainly softies, zoas and mushrooms. it's been a while since I had a tank so I'm gonna be taking this slow. I still have to build a stand for it. thanks in advance

It's actually the sump. Truvu used to make something called the Aquasystem that used the back compartment to hold different media and a return pump. The original configuration contained a mini wet/dry: drip tray, DLS (wound filter floss) and bio balls. Unfortunately, it never focused on a skimmer, which we know is the heart of many reef systems, and IMO the wet/dry was too small and not proportional, especially for tanks with heavy bioloads. Unless you're able to get behind the tank, it's hard to see what's going on in the rear compartment.

Really, it just boils down to if you want a AIO-style tank versus a sump under the tank. If it were me, I would convert the rear compartment into a large overflow. That way, I could have the benefits of installing a large sump under the tank -- flexible layout including the addition of a refugium and oversized skimmer. Of course, the other option is to keep it as is and add a HOB skimmer.

thanks D-Nak and Fishlee. yeah I might go that route. I'm just worried that I'd either have to build or find a stand that would clear the overflow pipe/tubing coming to/from the tank.

Just drill holes for the pipes through the top of the stand. Since tanks have so many configurations -- corner overflow, center overflow, dual overflows, etc. -- you're going to have to customize any stand you get.
