I'm new to this..... I'm getting ready to start a tank, but I'm not sure how BIG or how SMALL I should do. I heard The bigger the tank the better... is that ture? And What would be a good size for your first time???

Bigger is better and if your thinking about how big of a tank you need....I would go with maybe anywhere from a 45g to 55g to 75g to 100g or more....Just remeber to do alot of research and reading because your going to need as much help as you can get....feel free to ask as many questions as possible no matter how stupid it may sound to you, it could be a important factor to reefing.

O and welcome! And good luck.

Cheers, Jay.

How much are you looking to spend? Are you going to buy all new equipment, or do you want to go used?

Bigger is probably better but not if you have to skimp on equipment because of your planned budget. Larger aquariums are a lot more expensive on a month to month basis as well.

IMO I would start off with a 55 gal. Its a cheap tank and the equipment for it isnt so expensive. You can still have a lot of the fish you want, except for the swimmers, tangs mostly. Then you can decide whether you like the hobby or not, but you will.

I recommend reading through the stickies at the top of this forum. It will answer questions you have now, and questions you'll have in the future.

I think 75 is a good size just b/c you can get just about any fish you want and the equipment prices aren't insane for that size tank. I'm still using the first tank I bought which was 75gallons (duh) and after I've mastered it I'll think about getting one twice this size.

I started with a small 20 gallon. It was fun, but inevitably you will want to go larger, and then need all new equipment. I like my 75. If you look around, you can probably find a good deal on a used tank/stand/canopy. Many people upgrade in this hobby, so there are always lots of used tanks etc. to buy at a discount.

If you have the room for it, I'd recommend a 75 to start. Big enough for a Tang (not any Tang..but some) and a few happy tankmates. The equipment isn't much more expensive...you just wont have to sell and build a new tank quite as quickly....
