Anyone seen one like this? Picked it up about a week ago from Extreme. Thought it was pretty nice and unique (at least to me).

It may by common, but if it makes you happy and looks great in your tank... that's what it's all about... congrats

Which is why I posted "lovally coral" first :) I'v kept them for years and care not that they are common as I think their great when colorred up :) The only reason I denoted that is the poster asked if anyone had seen one like it before.

Nothing meant at ya really Gresh. I just wanted to let the guy know that to most people it may seem common.. but if it makes the owner happy and looks beautiful in his/her tank then it makes it special... you know what I mean ? :D

Shoot I don't have that piece in my tank, care to give a fellow reefer a piece

:) FWIW they tend to be a finicky one as far as color goes. Many tend to brown out, but grow insanely. I've found keeping them higher keeps more color. Flow is critical IME as well.

I just wanted it to be clear I wasn't poo poo'ing his coral as regardless of commanality (word?) it's a great coral. I typically don't buy something due to it being rare, but rather does it look good to me :)

totally agree with you there Gresh, I go more for asthetics in my tank than name brand...

and what ever else I get for free " begars can't be choosers "

Thanks again. The piece is quite large. The plan is to chop it up and put it in various parts of the tank to see where it does best. It is also my experience that my montis grow and look best in high flow areas. I should have plenty to share in the future.

The piece is a rock about 7 inches by 3 inches-probably about 3 inches thick. I was thinking of borrowing my friends wet saw to cut it up. I was also considering trying to find a grit type blade for my sawzall to do the job. I'd like to break it down to about 4-5 pieces. Any advice?

like Gresh said, it can be finicky about coloring up. Give it some time if it browns out, or if it hasn't colored up that much yet. Our piece almost doubled in size before finally coloring up to a nice yellow with a field of rich purple polyps. It should encrust pretty well for ya, in your "test spots" :). Definitely a nice score :D

No problem. I'll definitely be fragging as it is just too big. I'll probably have some frags of some other stuff to get rid of after the BACFM. Planning to $pend and will need the room!

got one similar to that (yellow/more bluish polyps), but agreed that it's kinda finicky.. most montis grow great in my tank, but that one i'm still trying to find a spot it really likes..

nice pics, if you can keep a healthy specimen like that with coloration and PE, that is a nice find!

Did you get that from me, Tom?:)

Sorry Karl, but nope.. this one is way too "common" for your tank :D. We got this from Tropical Paradise (or whatever it was being called at the time :)), back towards the beginning of this year, I think it was. It is a real stunner of a coral, but no LE or other name attached to it.

Oh! Pipe down, Tom!:p

For your information, I did have this piece in my tank at one point last year. Just didn't make the cut during the next 'weeding out' event.

Gorgeous piece, though. I just couldn't bring myself to giving it a primo spot to keep the yellow base.

I understand that completely. We have it in a moderately primo spot, to where the base is a golden color, but not quite the striking yellow that it is in the picture above :)
