New Zealand Diving

So I am heading there for a couple weeks in December and have heard of some awesome diving there. Where are the best places to stay there? My family was thinking maybe Auckland, is there diving near Auckland? Has anybody gone there and have pictures? Thanks

May be worth posting and asking for advice there.
