Newbe Here In IL

Thanks, I'm in Chicago now and I'm stopping by a new pet store that has lots of saltwater tanks and I'm going to speak to them and have them point out supplies while I'm there (how they work and prices).

You Da Man...

Please don't make any impulse buys there. After going to their store, tell us what they have that you're interested in and perhaps we can give some advice/experiences with the equipment that you want.

Oh, by-the-way, if you decide to go the wet-dry route, I have one that is rated for 125gal in good condition, that I can sell for $40.

The store I was in was a great and had allot of tanks with saltwater (45 or so). they do have fresh water but not as many as salt.I was in here for an hour or so.

A funny thing happened,I was talking to the guy when my father in law walks in. I don't speak to him that much but I was like oh no to myself. turns out he has a 240 long saltwater setup. I spoke to him and he adding another salt tank up and this one is going to be a setup like I want with rocks and fish. the sweet thing is he gave me a wet/dry for a 150 tank for free (Merry Christmas). I was told I could go with live rock but If I'm not in a hurry to throw fish in just to buy crushed coral and some live rock to get the tank cycled. I just need to buy a protein skimmer, gravel and salt. my father in law with help me from what it said. I have one other tank with discus in them so that's why I'm in no hurry but I do want to get the tank setup so when I can add fish. the fish I'm going to add down the way are some clowns, triggers, butterflies, tangs and some other ones I cant remember.they also drill tanks which I forgot to ask after I left.they are right off of route 59 in Plainfield by the corner of lockport.

Glad to hear that they hooked ya up.

I'd avoid the crushed coral and go with either a medium of fine grain sand. The crushed coral will end up trapping food particles and will cause a degradation of the water quality that you wouldn't experience with a deep sand bed. Another benefit of the DSB is that it provides a place for anaerobic bacteria to live and these bacteria will keep your nitrates down.

LMK the name of the shop if you remember it please.

I agree, sand also looks so much better. they had most tanks with white sand and it looked great.

Thanks for your help
