Newbie Drilling 40gal return

Hi All, I'm new here and this is my first post. I have a 40gal breeder that I want to drill for my return. I don't know how far down from the rim an how far from the edge to drill. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. I don't have specifics, but there are videos online to watch for drilling. For a return line it will depend on how much backflows into sump when power off. Also don't want to be too close to glass edge. Good luck.

where to drill is based on your over flow box and where you want it positioned...

image of the box your going to use would be helpful..

Thanks MJ........How do I determine the back flow to the sump if I haven't installed the return yet?

I think you have it backwords. or your words one.

The Return is the water from the pump in the sump to the tank.

The drain is the water returning to the tank..

So to determine Where , how big to drill.

First how much turn over rate do you want

40x 10= 400 gph pump

SO you would need to have a over flow box setup to handle a min of 400 gph if that is your target,, Plus say 20% for a safety..

I would on any tank drill two or 3 holes and do a Herbie or bean animal type drain . Herbie would be fine

So
how to do this..

using the above..

Get a over flow box if you have not to handle 600 gps.
Use the Manufacture guidelines to drill the hole locations and size
get a pump at 400 gph..

the 400 gph is only a example...

google herbie over flow and over flow box.. o

If it were my tank... i would do a Herbie coast to coast with 1x4 inch weir inside the tank dumping into a herbie external box ..

Thanks Ericarenee. I haven't figured out how to post a picture yet. The overflow box I expect to use is the Eshopps = S.

The Eshopps -S is an outside overflow box with a Herbie drain. All is needed is to drill one hole. It comes with a template so I know where to drill that hole. I need to know where to drill the return hole. I expect to use an Ehrim 1260 rated at 634 gph.

ohh

sorry i would run it over the top.. This helps with siphon break .Less water running back to sump at power outage and why drill when you do not have to.

If you are going to drill it i would do so on the opposite side of the tank as your over flow box for center over flow prob two and use a y on the pump ..

I do want to drill it. It will be on the opposite side from the over flow. I still don't know how far from the rim and edge to drill it.

I change my mind. I will run the return over the top rim. That makes the most sense. Thank you all for helping me see the light.
