Newbie needs advice on lighting a 20L...

So I'll I did was I separated the two pieces with my hands. The black strip will just come right off. The con is that there is a little gap and it doesnt cover the tank completely, but in the long run its a better thing to do.

Hmmmm, sounds like a good idea. I wanted to keep the glass top in place to keep the critters from jumping out (which they do) but I was also worried about the effect of that hinge on the light transmission. So, yeah, I think removing the hinge but keeping the pieces of glass on top may work. It will still cover most of the area, yet I can still remove a piece for feeding, etc.

Thanks!
:)

Tank looks nice  I'm glad you like the light. I would've felt bad if I recommended it and you hated it

tank looks great so far, IMO you can't go wrong chosing the halide. I've been in the process of setting up a 20L w/ AC110 fuge
and just went through the same decision process and looked at the same lights as you. I even have the same glass versa top. As for my light a went the cheap route and went w/ the Current dual satellite 2x 65w ( a step down from the Orbit ) $125 at the LFS no shipping etc. I'm sure in the future I'll end up upgrading but you have to start somewhere.

Now about that hinge on the glass top, you probably could cut some 2" pieces off it and stick them in the corners. You'd have a small gap in between the two plates of glass but should still have a functional hinge. I may do that on mine or lose it all toghether.

look forward to seeing your progress and sharing mine, ( once I have something to shown besides brand new unused equipment!)l

just wanted to correct a statement. t5s actully las 18 to 24 months before loosing output. thats why they are aloy more cost effective than hallides

So far, so good. At least light intensity shouldn't be a problem for awhile. :)
