Newbie question about curing

I have been very impressed with the photos and comments I have seen of TBS rock and I am planning a purchase within the next couple of weeks for my first tank.

From what I gather, TBS rock is not cured, but rather harvested and shipped so quickly that I can expect rather minimal die-off. And therefore I can put it right into my tank without worrying about stinking up the house, correct?

I would still cure the rock. I do beleave they ship it without being submursed in water so there should be enough die off to add a least a trace amoung of ammoina. I would not risk it if it was my tank.

Just get a rubbermaid container, and power-head, and a heater and cure it before adding it to your tank

It Does come shipped in water. There may be a small amount of die-off, and may be a small amount of marine smell for a few days when you first come in the house. It is in no way like curing LR, and you do not need to 'do' anything except follow the instructions included with the rock. You can expect a short or even negligible cycle unless something tragic happens in shipping. I got a 125g pkg, and some other stuff from Richard, so feel free and ask anything.

I don't think there is any easier transition method to a reef tank.

@Cliff. Please take the few seconds to look up the correct info so your $.02 becomes valuable feedback. It is a pretty glaring piece of misinformation about a key part of TBS shipping that separates it from most LR suppliers. Mine shipped 3000 miles with a 6 hr drive at the end and everything was fresh and happy. On a side note welcome to RC .

TBS rock is shipped in water and you should expect very minimal die off. When I set up my 40 gallon TBS package back in 2004 my ammonia never got above .12 and was at 0 by day 5 or 6 and had an AMAZING amount of life on it. Part 1 of the package had so many hitchhikers it was crazy and part 2 was unbelievable.

If you cure the rock in a rubbermaid with the lights out you may have an extreme amount of die-off.

You are right ...was to early in the morning LOL.....not enough coffee yet...but as this rock is the only rock in the industry that is shipped underwater....and has been for 30 years...is a bit perplexing when I see miss information and just went a little off the deep end....my bad..
