I have a 90 gal and would like to try keeping two acropora frags. I dont have any alternating power heads. Can I still do okay? What would be some signs that this wouldnt be ok?
i have a 90 also with no alternating current. my corals look great but those with alternating currents say the corals grow faster..books say it allows the faster assimilation of calcium, which would allow faster growth. i'm in the process of getting a wavemaker and teo evolutiom powerheads by hydor to give it a try.( cant or dont want to spend big money for vorteks)
Alternating powerheads are not a must have for sps. I think they make it a bit easier and you can probably get by with fewer pumps by going that route. You can do fine with constant speed powerheads though. The key is not to point them so that they're blowing in a straight line across your coral.
I run a few hydor koralias and they're sitting on the back glass of my tank near the corners. They blow at an angle towards the front glass, and the bounce of the glass causes enough turbulence that the polyps on my sps are constantly blowing to the front then the back then from side to side.
