Newbie questions

Well I've upped feeding and turned off the GFO reactor, I guess it's just a wait and see game now. Thanks!

Chalice and torch (?) both looking better today, purple stylo about the same. I think I've made progress, just need to keep the mag and calc up and stable and see what happens.

Here's another newbie question. I have tiny bubbles all over the rocks. Don't really see a lot of micro bubbles floating around the tank, just on the rocks. Good? Bad? Does it matter?

Is it new rocks?

So, a couple of updates. After talking to one of the guys at Seascape last week, I made a couple of changes. He thinks I may have had too much flow in the tank, and that a lot of the stuff I saw floating around was actually sand. I dropped the flow down a bit on the MP40 and RW8, and the water is much clearer now, but still has good flow. I also dropped my Radions from 75% max to 65% max, as I think I was bleaching a couple of corals.

Also, I've been running kalk in my ATO for the last few weeks, and have been testing calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity every other day. I've kept everything solid, last night's testing showed cal at 425, mag at 1325, and alk at 9, and those levels have been pretty steady for the last couple of weeks.

Most of what I was seeing in my corals has reversed, with color coming back and lots of new growth on everything. The bubbles on the live rock I think was just a small bloom, as I've not seen any lately. All together, I'm very happy with how things are looking!

One other change I made, was my fuge light. I bought this little LED flood light, says it's in the 6500K range, for my fuge originally. So far any macro algae I've put in the fuge has died or shriveled, and I blame this cheap little light. I have a small clip light that came with my Cadlights Mini 8 gallon that hasn't been set up yet, so I thought I'd swap them out and see how it does. There's no model number or anything on this light, it's a mixture of blue and white LEDs and Cadlights says it's suitable for SPS/LPS. It's definitely bright as hell, but it's too soon to tell if my current batch of caulerpa is recovering or responding to the light at all. One thing I did notice last night though, is a bubbly, slimy film covering the surface of the water in my fuge. What could this be?

Thanks again everyone!!

If that slimy, bubbly film on floating on your fuge water is red/pink/purple it's more than likely cyano bacteria.

Without seeing your sump it is hard to guess. I had a similar issue because I kept the water line in the sump higher than the baffles. This caused the surface to become stagnate. I had to create a higher baffle to skim the surface water and keep that from happening.

There should be at least a 1/2" drop from the baffle to the last chamber in your sump, that will prevent scum from accumulating on the surface.

There's several inches, the water goes over that baffle, through a small sponge, and then under another baffle into the return pump chamber. Should be plenty of slow through there.

Here's a picture of the bubbly slime on the surface of my fuge water. Last night I looked at it and it seems to be thinning out a bit. Occasionally I scoop it out with a small fish net but it's always back the next day.

Need a shot of the whole sump to help. From what I can make of the picture it looks like you are producing bubbles somewhere that are collecting protein. (like a skimmer) and they are setting there in a stagnate flow area. But again with out a full sump shot that is hard to tell. I know you have the baffle there that should be skimming the water surface but if your return pump is undersized for the size sump you have you can get a very slow flow through the sump causing that also.

Looks like stagnant water. There needs to be done type of flow across the surface. Small power head, or a line of of your return.
